If you really want to get some sick action drill an out rigger mount off the port bow. Place one of those 18ft outriggers that are made for small boats. Cleat off your 1000lb dacron and run a yummy flyer (or make your own) up the rigger so it looks like the yummy is flying out of the bow spray. Make sure that yummy is out of the water more then it is in. Watch it get nailed. I am sure you can do this on the cheap. I am just not smart enough to engineer it though.

Best way would be to tie a black feather to your 1000# dacron tie this to 3 different 2" pieces of bamboo 12' long get 2 buddies to man up on the bamboo poles and just swing the yft onto the deck My grandfather and his brothers did this with bft in the 60's and 70's There are some videos around that also show this method
Now you slap the feather on the water and just let the fish propel itself and just guide it in the air onto the boat You could try the yummie fish or the frenzy fish but the feather has worked and will work great as well

i got this pig moving rite now. seas hitting the port bow, 13kts of wind. just waiting to see some life... theres a small body of fish about 18 miles ahead of us from what one of the other drill ships relayed to me. ill put up a few pics of the bow and what the wave looks like so you at least got an idea of what we got to work with out here.

Good luck man,
I'm sure you thought of this but... keep your ass in the boat (that's the only advice I have for this plan). Once that tuna gets over the initial shock of the line coming tight he's going to be hot when you stick the gaff.

Interesting

This summer we picked up a blue marlin in the middle of no where/ 60 fathoms 1/2 mile below the Ambrose->ACK shipping lane w. a freighter 1/2 mile off and crossing just above us.

Its the 3rd time in 2 years I've picked up fish in proximity to a freighter; I've been instinctively working the wake after one passes by, but I never really thought about it till this point.

Thanks for the tip.

Wind and seas were uncooperative. We just put the breaks on. No tuna... bastards. only hit one patch of bait and only saw a few terradactal size flyers. i did grab a few shots of the birds though. they were doing what the tuna do... flying low rite along the side of the hull, soon as a flyer kicks out, in they come and snaggem up. the birds tight to the ship were big pelicans. it looked like some terns or something like that over the only real concentration of bait that i could see. hopefully tomorrow is gonna be better. with weather (and fish!!!) cooperating more.

anyone got any tricks to gettin shots of flying fish? kinda hard steadying up on those f*ckers

first shot is looking down from the bridge wing. about 100 or so feet off the water. the wake your seeing is roughly 45-50ft below the main deck. just to give you some frame of reference.
second shot was the pelicans waitin to pick off the flyers. seems like the flyers kinda pause once they hit the water. the pic of the flying fish was to blurred for anything. ill work on gettin something more substantial tomorrow
