TX rigging help

Taking trip to Galveston for some off shore party boat fishing. Taking my own rods/reels was told by boat skipper to also bring my own tackle, with stinks by the way. Need 6/0 hooks and 12oz sinkers. Do these sinkers need to be "egg sinkers" or another stlye? Do the hooks need to have wire leaders, I assume we fishing for red snapper and other toothy species. Also how do I rig up? Hook on bottom, weight with leader then hook? Any help appreciated.

Frank, all the other guys are using squid for a reason. IT WORKS. If are fishing for snapper you don't need wire. If you have to take your own tackle you need to learn how to tie a chicken rig. It is a little hard to explain but you can find examples in books or on line. I tie mine with 80# test with a 40# section and loop that connects the bank sinker to the rig. This way when the weight gets hung up, it breaks. You loose the sinker but you save the rig. Squid and sardines are great snapper baits and with a chicken you can fish one of each. Use a 7/0 circle hook with a 4/0 short shank hook attached togeather via a small barrel swivel on each dropper (2).

Leave the Williamson lures at home. To much going on for you to be screwing around with lures. Keep it simple.

Frank, help is at hand

Have attached a picture to help you out on this one.... i like to use a twisted dropper loop on this rig details of how to tie it are here. i also just use circle hooks on this rig and found that less fish get off on the way up.

Haven't snapper fished in the gulf, but the following describes the rigs I use for grouper fishing in the Atlantic. I hope it helps.

My bottom fishing rigs

Good luck and please post some reports and pictures of your trip.
