While i love my 40 Cabo make no mistake about it, the boss wants a larger boat and i'll be damned if i'm going to talk him out of it!!!

I'm not getting any younger either and with 15 years of hard commercial/sports fishing behind me already i feel a LOT older than i should at this stage of the game...i'm certainly looking forward to a larger boat too...for obvious reasons...

I wasn't too happy about how they edited my writing down for that article in Marlin, but it is what it is...the actual article had a lot more color to it...more of my frantic style of storytelling...it still conveys most of the message though so i'm happy about that, and happy some of our experiences benefit others...god knows i studied those magazines and learned all i could from them...still do as a matter of fact!!!

Yes we have been, and i love those lines as well...problem is there's just not enough of these beautiful boats on the market!!! I don't wish misfortune on anyone, but hopefully this downturn in the economy will cause a few more boats to hit the auction block sooner than expected...time will tell...until then i'm trying to convince some people out here on the west coast to START BUILDING BOATS!!!!

The west coast boat building subject is a tragedy in my book. I have been part of a team for years looking to build the new tradition of west coast sportfishers. We have had many pieces of the puzzle but in reality California is an extremely harsh environment for boat builders. Unless you venture out to the desert like Cabo did, setting up a five star plant is next to impossible. In Costa Mesa there have been talks of driving out the marine industry and other likes. The only thing saving them now is that their establishment dates back so far, they are exempt for the time being. Same for the surfboard/glass shops. Resin brings a lot of red tape and it's a shame we don't have the type of boat building traditions as the east coast. We have all seen some of the east coast boat building plants located right on the water, the Cali law makers would never allow this. Probably the biggest tragedy of west coast boat building was the death of Pacifica. These boats were built like battle ships and embraced the west coast fishing style like no other. The last time I checked the molds were for sale....the 41 ' mold was in good shape and the 44' mold was not so good. You could probbably pull one more hull from it and remold it, but what a great boat.

Good to hear from you Tom...i'm eagerly awaiting the return of our blue marlin so i can put those lures you sent me into action!!!!

I completely agree with you...the law makers have all but snuffed out the marine industry here on the west coast...my only real choice has been Cabo and that's who i've supported until our needs outgrew their products...

While i am also intrigued by Maverick yachts down in Costa Rica, after speaking with them there is just no shot of them producing a boat large enough for our needs in the near future...so, it's back to the east coast i go with a pocket full of money that's going to be spent wisely and for a great product, but it'll wind up in a bank account a loooooooong way from our back yard...

Nevertheless, when you want the best and you have to have it...you'll go anywhere to find what you're looking for....and above all else there is no question in my mind where the best boats for our needs are manufactured...i'm just getting tired of all this flying!!!!

Carolina Boats

Praise for a Paul Spencer is well worth it....incredible boats... If your boss has the money just do it...
Don't forget about resale value either...it's hard to beat a big name custom builder for resale...a lot of owners make money by flipping their new custom boats within two years without putting too many hours or wear on the boat...but thats a big investment to be owning a boat and putting money down for a new one at the same time...

Good luck...
With all of the quality boats coming out of that area you'll be happier in your new ride

I'm very lucky to be in a situation with an owner who provides a generous kitty for such purchases...and make no mistake about it Paul's girls are in the top of the list...i am in love with his 59...

Resale value is a plus for sure with Custom Carolina's out here on the west coast...they go quick for the simple reason that there just isn't that many that pop up on the open market...maybe one or two a year...

I'll have a lot more to think about after this trip...NC here we come!!!

Hi Josh, sounds like your in some "good trouble". I am sure you will score a beauty and the east coast has plenty of them. One thing that I have always considered when buying a used boat , does she have the reputation of raising fish ? One boat in particular that we picked up had a huge reputation as a fish raising boat. This boat was especially successful in Cabo San Lucas as well in Cali. Well, low and behold that damn boat raised more marlin in the pattern than any other. There definitely is a mystical side to great fishing boats something I compare to a great guitar. You can have the same motors, exhaust, and displacement but no two boats are alike. The vibrations from each boat is unique and may have something to do with raising more fish than another hull with equal stats.Just something to think about.

I'm going to send you a new lure before the season hits....I think you're going to love the color and flash of this thing puts out.
