MORE Giant Blues in Kona!!!

The number of Giant Blue Marlin encounters in Kona, HI this year keeps growing and growing...Although no one has brought anything in bigger than Tim Hicks 934, several Giants have been making appearances in the pattern and not sticking or breaking lines (130) or straightening out hooks.

The latest episode occured yesterday when (Melton Pro staffer) Weston Leslie's cousin, Kelly Medeiros, was trolling inside TT buoy with one line in the water looking for the Porpoise school and Tuna. The lone lure was a Blue Pink skirted Large Melton Funnel Jet because he was fishing commercial style for Ahi Kelly had a Penn International 130 ST with and Electramate 1380 with 200 lb. M.B. Dacron.

The bite was very minimal, the fish siped the deep running lure and started pulling drag, but doing nothing spectacular in the way of jumping on taking a ton of line, Kelly (fishing solo) had the fish to his 19 foot skiff in about 15 minutes with the steady pressure from the Electramate and grabbed the leader...At first he thought a pilot whale was chasing his fish (thinking either a big Mahi or Tuna)...Then he realized it WAS his fish, not a whale and definitely the biggest fish he has ever seen in Hawaii, he began taking wraps on leader and trying to figure out if he could reach his knife to cut the line once he got it close.

Including the Bill the fish was just a bit shorter than the length of his boat, but the extra pressure from grabbing leader decided things, the fish woke up and instantly took 500 yards off the reel in seconds, making massive head lunges not clearing the water. The 200 lb. Dacron broke right as the fish was getting to the spool, what was really interesting was another fish roughly the same size came up jumping beside the fish that broke the line...Not just one monster, but two...

Wes and Mark are replacing the drag washers on the 130 in the shop today and rigging another Melton Funnel Jet. Kelly looked at the Marlin Mount in our store and nodded his head that the fish was about that size or bigger....The mount in our store in Marlin Parkers 1,400 lb. Blue caught in 1990...

This might be the year we see something surpass that fish...I already had my shot, Kelly had his, who's next?

SONOFA....

Tim these stories of grander are KILLING ME!!! I can't wait till big fish season around here again!!!!

That Melton cherry jet medium size was on FIRE for us all last season...we run them deep in the long riggers or on the stinger and they catch just as many big marlin for us as the short corner mama spankers...elephants eat peanuts, sure...but big blues eat cherries!!!

Josh,

As you can imagine there is a tremendous amount of leagalize to anchor a 162 foot 300 passenger boat in 6,000 feet of water 3 miles off Kona...But if it goes according to plan 30-60 days...They have been working on it since last spring and have just cleared some of the last hurdles...

The fishing it will provide for Kona will be extremely diverse, which is great for the traveling angler who isn't into trolling for big ones all day or just likes to pull on a bunch medium fish.

By the way Marlin Parker caught his 1,400 pound Blue within a quarter mile of the last FAD (the Double D). There were also several other giant fish not to mention the BIGEYE!

Soon come, we hope!

Go getum in PV...You know they're inbound as I write this...Keep an eye on the Short Corner...Especailly if it is a Marlin Magic Junior Pear (black) with Black Vinyl......

Make that new rig go back fastward!!!!
