Monster Blues in Kona...Breaking 130 EASILY...
Hey,
Just in case you guys only thougth we fished at night for Threshers and Swordy's read on.... The whole reason I move here was put into to perspective today…A REAL ONE ate the short corner as we were trolling out to the Tsunami Buoy and broke the mainline after taking about 550 yards of Amilan 130 off the reel. The run wasn’t warp speed or epic, but solid and down then the fish bolted from the water and broke line by the shear drag of the main line through the water. Gene Vander Hoek & Carlton Aria had coached and explained the procedure of backing off the drag to almost 1 pound of pressure in this situation, but their point never really sank in until today. The first 100 seconds of the fight seemed pretty typical for an exciting short corner bite, but the progression to breaking the mainline over the last 20 seconds was mesmerizing. When Marlin Parker detailed the fish looked like a small humpback whale (small whale?) hitting the water some 500 yards behind the boat we figured it was a good one. John Patterson, the owner of Marlin Magic II had taken the rod out of the holder with 30 lbs. plus of drag (strength wasn’t a problem). As the fish dove for the first 100 seconds of the 120 second battle seemed status quo, lines cleared, going backwards, drag backed off to less than 10lbs. still the fishes deep dive and sudden rocket move to the surface broke the absolute best IGFA 130 monofilament leaving the angler and crew feeling very overcome in a matter of seconds. Kona, HI is about big fish, make no mistake about it, this fish had just added a couple of new students to the class of 2008. No wonder anglers do not want to leave this big rock once it happens to them, the only way to redeem yourself is to actually go back and try and land one of these behemoths…I can only assume this takes the rest of your life, maybe longer… If Tim Hicks capt. Of Illusions, 934 lb. Blue this month wasn’t warning enough, this should serve as a reminder….Watch out for the Big Blues, they’re here... Yes I will start posting pictures and video from Kona, HI soon...

I guess you have to really love fishing to let it bother you, it's been 7 days and I still wake up in the middle of the night EXACTLY when the fish eats the short corner...
I wonder where the black Marlin Magic Pear that WAS on the SHORT CORNER is right now....SOB. I haven't been this bummed since I figured out Santa Claus wasn't real and KNOWING THAT was NOW going to cost me extra presents at X-MASS!!!! (BIG disapointment) Damit...where's Capt. Josh...I need a cold adult beverage and someone I can jabber at non stop about losing big fish...SOB...JOSH....I know he's at the Fred Hall show....PV tanned dude, wearing a Pelagic hat...JOSH!
