One of the fellas who packed a bag on Friday spent Saturday and Sunday riding the BALANCAL taking photos of the "bite". He should have gone home this morning back to London but the crew offered him a fish today so out he went. Still putting the chair and bucket together when the short right went tickety tick. Thinking something was wrong, the deckie was busy looking at the drag lever to check it was on strike when the damn reel started to HOWL.
To cut a long story short, after 35 mins they had a fish alongside that measured 11' 10" short. That puts it into the 1100 - 1200lb class. She swam off just fine...... AND an excited James da WOUND UP just rang me from Bermuda. It's going off there too. Card has released a 500lb fish on the CHALLENGER, Allen de Silva has jumped off an 800lb fish, and James - oh poor James - he just jumped off a fish he called "BEEG". I guess he'll tell us all about later....... |

Are you referring to Oliver, Roddy? This would make his year to catch a grander.

That is great news for him. He has a real passion for Madeira and deserves such a fine fish.

I can't offer any deals or such like, but if anyone would like some info/recommendations I'd be delighted to help. I've travelled there every year since 2000 and may be able to offer a little insight into the fishery. There are some good operations there that have been a little in the shade as far as publicity goes but which are well worth fishing with.

ps. That's a great fish for Oliver and for that old fox Captain Anibal. He's one of the guys that I pay great attention to whenever I'm out there. The Balancal website at www.madeira-marlin.com.

Here's a pic of Ollie's fish from this morning. That's Capt Anibal holding the leader. Like a lot of big Madeiran fish, this one seems happy to lie alongside. You can see why the snooter evolved in Madeira - it's a great tool for reviving fish like this.
![]() I hope James has a few pics from his adventure this morning too ! |

Madeira-"Grander Update"
Guys,
My crew of Capt. John Kelmer and Chris Weeks arrives in Madeira on Friday and have been busy putting the boat back together. They went out this afternoon at 4:00 just to troll for a few hours and dial in the lure spread. 15 minutes after I hung up with them my cell rings......"Boss, we just got blowed up on the short bait!, she looked 650 or so!" I aksed "Who is fighting her?" John says "Chris our mate?" Well, your busy call me bcak I tell them. 30 minutes later I get the call. "Solid 800-850 on the Marlin Magic Henry, Short Bait"! Nice, not bad for a late afternoon trip! I am off to Madeira on Saturday for 10 days....I cant wait.
