Hollywood Shake-Down....2/22

Certainly the last thing i probably needed was the Miami boat show generously smothered over the shenanigans we've been up to lately. But who can resist the Sirens call after all. Ummmm did you just say billions of dollars in electronics, boats, fishing gear, gadgets, and gizmos? Did you just say private house parties and scantly clad promo girls??? South Beach with a pocket full of expense account dollars and a head full of steam sounds like medicine to me. SIGN ME UP Gordo...would you believe it i just happened to have sharpened my skates?!?!

While i only had a few days to enjoy the festivities, i'd have to say i used my time wisely. Roddy Hayes, Fred Archer, Pro Soft, Tracy Melton, Marlin Parker, Canyon Runner, Bart Miller and a host of other manufacturers and sponsors were all zeroed in on and made to feel the scorpion's sting. Not that we beat them up too badly, but as i said repeatedly to the boys trying their damndest to defend their inventory, "HEY LOOK, THIS IS MY ANNUAL RE-STOCKING TRIP. NOW GIVE IT UP BEAWTCH!!!" I feel particularly bad about the sacking we put on at both Melton International locations at the show. Realistically they weren't prepared for our kind of warfare. The lovely Team Pelagic girl Adrean i had by my side would slide in first and gather the boys around her at one end of the counter. Standing up nice and tall in those high-heel naughties, chest out, arse tight, a picture of deadly perfection leaving me alone and unsupervised to sack the jewels. Code named "Operation Scantly Clad" our execution was flawless until we squared off against Roddy Hays back in the Big Game room, who put on a herculean defense as only that sly Kiwi can. Nevertheless, thanks largely in part to Adrean, we have re-provisioned the stores boys, and you can be sure Operation Scantly Clad will be rearing her dangerous head again at Fred Hall. YE BE WARNED SPONSORS!!!

While the circus rolled on, the boss and his family were waiting for me to arrive back in Vallarta where they had been enjoying some much needed R&R and eagerly awaiting the information i was carrying back with me pertaining to the search for the next Conquistador. This President's weekend trip for the big guy and his family always interferes with my responsibilities at the Miami boat show and while i do hate to leave the festivities i figured i'd better get back to divulge the goods to the people who were ultimately shelling out a few million dollars for our collective new toy. MENTAL NOTE: Just cause you're names on the card doesn't mean you own it!!!! Check!

As usual the boss was tickled pink with the intel i carried back with me. He is after all a very intelligent man and realizes that despite the showmanship, flagrant spending, and general disregard for trackable accounting, deep down i do know what i'm talking about when it comes to things like boating and fishing. And when i told him i'd just found a spectacular deal on a new boat for a considerable discount over what we had anticipated spending he ordered me back to the east coast on the spot to close the deal. "GOOD WORK SKIP!!!" he concluded. "Just doin my job boss...just doin my job".

Needless to say the next day, yesterday, i'm on another plane headed state-side backed up with a couple of million reasons why i love this lifestyle so much. PINCH ME, i'm dreaming...thoughts of those years in the 22 foot grady seem a looooooong way away. Mayday...reality keeps loosing meaning...MAYDAY!!!!

Because it's nearly impossible to fly from PV to North Carolina with out having to spend the night somewhere like Mexico City i opted once again to deek over to LA for a night on the town with Steve, Bogii, Matt and the rest of the lost boys. We had another great dinner to celebrate Steve's b-day since we officially celebrated it in South Beach Miami last week. After dinner Matt and Steve decided to act responsibly while Bogii and i opted to try our hands at the casino. Bogii's friends were playing a small Hollywood venue later that night so we decided to VAMANOS and see what kind of trouble we could get into.

Well trouble has a way of following us from time to time and last night was no exception. We're about half way to the show when those all-too-familiar red and blue lights cascade through the night followed by the indecipherable jargon coming from the loud speaker. Translation was not necessary, the message was clear.

Bogii pulled over and gave himself time for one of those deep inhalations that comes in times like these. Clearly, we hadn't been breaking any laws, but when the heat is on feelings can often turn contrary.

After a few questions it was apparent Bogii was getting out of the vehicle and when i turned to see him being led away, hands behind his back i started speed-dialing the 12 or so lawyer/clients i keep contact info on for times like this. About the third ring into my first phone call my door flies open and before i know what's happening i'm on the curb, hands behind my back, giving it my best olympian effort not to add coal to an already volatile situation.

In the cops' defense they were just doing their job, and I'm sure they had a valid reason to pull us over in the first place. Like a family of 4 was just gunned down and murdered by a couple of hooligans fitting our description or something. Throughout the entire ordeal i tried to keep a light-hearted attitude because i don't get a chance to see live rock and roll all that often and i was going to be damned if some over-zealous Hollywood cop was going to chit on my enchilada. At one point i asked if i was allowed to make a phone call right there on the scene because "don't you cops know i'm a Canadian citizen and when i get the Queen on the line she's gonna be pissed!!!" A few of the cops laughed at that one, most however did not.

Of course eventually after a lot of questions, searching, and general police work they just let us go. What were you expecting? We don't break the law and we certainly don't go looking for that kind of trouble, it was just a case of wrong place at the wrong time. Lucky for those boys though, i didn't have to wake the Queen.

Well with that kind of adrenaline rush coursing through our veins we hit that Hollywood rock and roll club in a veritable explosion. The gloves came off and the velvet rubbed from the horns as the sexy twin Japanese sisters on the bass and guitar broke into a heart pounding set that left the two white boys behind the drums and microphone scattering for cover. BINGE kicked our asses flat out for an hour while the bar crowd literally erupted around us. You heard it here first people...BINGE is going BIG in the very near future. Bogii and i immediately decided to get them down to Vallarta for a few shows during the Ujena Bikini Jam this summer and if we can manage it you can bet your piggy bank on one thing...VALLARTA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.

So now what? Rapid decent from 35,000 feet toward an entirely different reality waiting for me in North Carolina. Happy to be here now, lucky enough to realize it, and secretly praying the ride will never end. What will tomorrow bring????? HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW!!!!!

Josh

If you get up around the Wanchese area to look at the boat builders let me know. I will show you the night life around nags head. Not a whole lot of it this time of the year but better than nothing.
