The Acapulco Story...9/20
Well since i'm sitting here in Mexico City...taking full advantage of the open bar that the VIP AeroMexico lounge with the guitar player from the band Mana...i thought it's as good a time as any to talk a little bit about Acapulco...and the bite that's occuring down there...
Having never set foot in Acapulco proper aside from running up the dock at the fuel station to sign up for my required Yacht Club membership before i started pumping fuel i have to admit i had a hint of a sour taste in my mouth for the entire Acapulco experience... Luckily...i received a call from a good friend who suggested i hop on a plane and join them for a little fishing...an invitational tournament so to speak...and since we all know me it took very little convincing before i was packed and lugging camera equipment and my usual bag of tricks towards the ticket counter at AeroMexico... I arrived before the rest of the crew early tuesday afternoon and got spooked right off the bat by the amount of military police, PFP, army, security guards what have you...all seemingly miserable from birth and made even more dangerous by the arsenal they openly displayed in the airport...i says to myself...OK self...best not to be letting the horns out too quickly...chin up and cheeks tight...aye-aye... All thoughts of being Guantanamoed dissapated quickly as the first of many friends filed through the arrival gates and into my field of view...the looks of the talent i was up against was unnnerving...this was going to be a tough tournament...but my god it was too late to turn back now... After filing into our busses and making our way to the hotel we hit the pool and beach before filing into the showers and later...much later...making our way over to the registration and kick-off party... I won't bore you with unnecessary details of what happened later...but i could see the competition was hell bent on taking it out of me that night...considering...and rightly so...that the more i endulged myself during the evenings festivities the better chance they all had at gaining the upper hand over the next two days...not a bad plan in theory...but what the competition failed to remember is that this is the Devil they were dealing with...and you don't just start growing horns for nothing... Not much sleep was had that evening...so be it...but we nevertheless managed to tear into the next day's fishing with gladiator ferver...the bait...which was lively...was no doubt the discerning factor leading to my overall success... Lo and behold i soared to the winners podium with a flurry of activity on the final day of the event...managing to capture a quadruple header of sailfish in the dying hours of tourney to seal the win and ensure that the Devil's legacy will be firmly remembered in Acapulco lore and the annals of pescatorial pursuits therein... So i've learned two things from all of this... One...never make assumptions of a place until you've dedicated the time to truly understand it... And two...never...EVER...underestimate the effectiveness of a quadruple hookup... Sadly...no photos...for some reason...there was just no time to pick up the camera...at least while the fish were on... I'm back in PV shortly before midnight if i don't decide to take a job with Mana playing the tamborine and handling other such duties...and pending such hasty career changes...i should be at the banco by 8 or so in the morning...best keep the coffee on...

The only experience i had in Acapulco was Spring Break of 05' and I wasn't there doing the same type of "fishing" you were.
It is a bit unnerving seeing the mil-cops walking around with Mini-14's and Mossberg Pumps. They are pretty decent though. Congrats on the win! |
