WTB - Smoker
I am looking to purchase a smoker. Any ideas of which is better route to take? I am leaning towards a propane system rather than charcoal. I also saw an electric model offered at Bass Pro.
you can do propane or electric if you want to go the easier route, but I prefer charcoal. it gives a better flavor and a bit of natural smoke before you start adding wood. I've got a Brinkman Smoke-N-Grill and love it. works for most everything I want to make, just not a whole lotta room on the grates. Its a great beginning to intermediate smoker, and its cheap: $37 bucks out the door at my local Wal-Mart. Use only hardwood lump coal, not briquettes if you opt for coal.

I have a Weber charcoal grill and a Napoleon gas grill. I end up using the gas b/c of the time. I understand smoking something is time consuming process.
How much longer do you have to wait for the charcoal to heat the unit up? I would think gas or electric would be easier to maintain the temp??
Gas and electric are easy to maintain temps, but if you practice a little bit with coal, its just as easy. It normally only takes 15-30 minutes to get my coals perfect depending on what Im using. recently, I'll start it with a little Match-Lite to get a flame, then load the bowl with hardwood lump. Did a smoked meatloaf yesterday, only had to add a few handfuls of coal to maintain 250* for 4 hours. Nothing a few beers and watching grazing horses wont cure.
Remember, anything worth doing is worth doing well.
get the original bradley (the black one) smoker, electric. No fuss and everything comes out the same if not better than the traditional wood smokers. I have both and quit using my wood smoker.
