Let's talk about Okra
I love Okra and have a whole row of it planted so I'll be eating alot of it this summer. I get tired of the same ole 2 ways-- Fried and Steamed.
We all know about Gumbo, but are there any other tasty ways to prepare these pods? I almost forgot, dill pickled Okra is awsome, but I'll leave the pickling to Mt. Olive.

Just good ole' fried Glenn. had all the way you can do it and fried is the best way to go. Goes great w/ almost any dish as a great side. However stewed okra seasoned well with chicken makes a good hot dip.

Glenn-
Deep fry it whole....oh yea baby!...that's what I'm talkin' about.....take about a pound of okra......microwave it for about 1 minute ...this is like par boiling......make up a batter like you're making hush puppies, except add some cajun spice.....old bay.....a little onion powder and S&P to taste.....heat the oil to 375 deg ....dip the okra in the batter and deep fry a few pieces at a time......season it with your favorite dry seasoning as soon as it comes out of the oil......drain on a rack over paper towels.......eat while hot and crisp...... ![]()

Prize winning OKRA...
The first garden I ever had of my own I planted Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, Okra, and a few other vegetables. I was so proud of my okra plants especially because I had the biggest Okra I had ever seen. I remember thinking how delicious they were gonna be fried up(the only way to eat em) and bragging about them to my then fiance' who later married me despite my stupidity. To make a long story short...I learned quickly that bigger isn't always better. THE STRINGY PARTS IN THE FREAKIN OKRA COULD NOT BE CHEWED THROUGH! I should have realized they were unedible when I was slicing them up to be battered. I can still remember my wife's face when one of those strings pierced her jaw when she bit into the first piece. Then she tried to act like it was good. She nearly killed me when she found out I had already tasted it.
Moral of the story- Prune your plants often early to promote a very bushy plant and promote more flowers. Pick the Okra when they are tiny and fry them whole for the most delicious fried Okra. HOLWACHAGOT |

Cooked some this past weekend. Got the smaller ones from the Teeter and sliced them up and rolled around in some buttermilk and then dredged them in some House Autry mildly spicy breader and fried them up. Forgot how good they are. Had corn on the cob and some stir fried NY strip and shrimp as well. MMM MMM good!
