    Frugal Cooking!

Growing up there was a guy on TV called the Frugal Gourmet

Well I went shopping this past week and I am appalled at the prices at the super market.
I actually put all of my produce back when I realized how much i was going to spend on produce.

I now shop with a calculator.
I knew a produce guy just opened up down the street so I was going to get from him as I knew his prices were good.

I shop at ACME not a boutique super market.

There were some bargains at acme so I watched my prices.
    Tonight's dinner will be
Roasted Chicken Thighs .88 cents a lb the family pack was around 4lbs so cost was 3 and change

I will roast them all as we will have the rest for lunch tomorrow.
Zucchini from Produce Express four large for 2.50. They are not the nice small ones you see the super markets but those where 2.99/lb i think. I'll roast some Yukon golds to round out the meal.
back of spuds was a few bucks so I should be around 6-8 bucks for a meal for a family of 4. I'll post my recipes and photos tonight.

The Frugal Gourmet lost his show due to sexual harrassment of his male co-workers...

One thing I have found is that after major holidays, the supermarkets mark down remaining items the following Monday... I usually stock my freezer then...Chicken, turkey, ham, beef...

    Cheap Cuts...

Thighs and other cheap cuts of Chicken and Beef make the best meals..The butchers usually keep the good stuff for themselves. Kitchen staff make 'family meals' usually of these inexpensive cuts, and they usually aren't as pretty but taste twice as good. And when in doubt...just cook it low and slow, like in a crock pot and braise it.. and don't get me raving about offal...tripe and liver might be the best thing on earth...

Cheap cuts have the most flavor, yes sometimes you need to get creative. but it can be worth it.

Oh you can save the liver, thats about the only thing I don't eat off a cow. I'll eat everything else but the MOOOOOOO. I shouldn't say that, never had mountain oysters and can't say i'm running out to try them.

Ok so hears my dinner on the cheap:

Dusted the thighs with some McCormick Smoke house maple rub
and Heated the Calphalon Grill pan (Best on the market)
    till it smoked

Browned them on the stove top on both sides than finished them in the oven at 350 untill fall off the bone.

Sliced up the zucchini, chopped 2 cloves of garlic and finished them with some white wine (Riesling) and a squeeze of fresh lime. S+P

    Baked Potato

I think in my head everyone in the family ate a hearty meal for under $2.00 a piece

Wow, I didn't know that about him, well we never had the internet back than so info didn't travel as fast.

You are correct about the meats following a holiday. St. Patty's is coming up and I will get a few corned beefs when they go on sale.

White wine was for the zucchini, not for drinking. I was into grey goose for a little while but mostly a rum guy
