An excellent starting reference, a must read, that links diet and disease and cancer is the following: The China Study by T.Colin Campbell, PhD, and Thomas M. Campbell II, Copyright 2004, Benbella Books.
It illustrates that what you eat does have serious implications for incidence of disease and cancer. It also summarizes in an easy-to-read manner how the food industry and the medicine/pharmaceutical industries are killing us with fat, cholesterol, chemicals (artificial fats, sweetners, preservatives, colors), drugs that we don't need, and surgical and other treatments that do nothing to cure disease but only prolong our suffering and line their pockets.
Bottom Line: Primarily a Whole-Plant food diet, including grains, nuts, vegetables, fruit, with fish, olive oil, and sugars in moderation (or minimize). No meat, no dairy, no partially hydrogenated oils, no McDonalds, no stuffing milk and dairy down your kids throats, etc. ie.: Stop Eating Crap.
Another good book is the following: Younger Next Year (A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You Are 80 and Beyond), by Harry Lodge, MD. and Chris Crowley, Copyright 2004, Workman Publishing Co. So, after you stop eating crap and start eating a healthy diet you can get off your butt and start exercising.
Warning this is a radical departure from traditional thinking about what a healthy diet is and how we can live healthier lives. It takes and open mind, strong will, and an interest in truly being healthy. Hope this helps.
