Using a Snap (Metalic Loop Knot)

For all those that walk on the dark side, like myself and use a clip at the end of your fly line and for those that think it is just plain dumb and not the proper thing to do. I had my doubts as to whether it would meet IGFA requirements.

According to Jason Schratweiser at IGFA:

1 – A snap is IGFA “legal” so long as it is measured as part of the 12-inch or less bite (shock) tippet, not as part of the 15-inch class tippet. The shock tippet is measured from the eye of the fly hook to and including the knot that joins the shock leader to the bite tippet.

2 – Ditto if you use a 12-inch or less wire bite tippet with a barrel swivel at one end and a snap a the other.

It is okay snap to it when fly fishing.

Hello, my name is Blake, and I use a snap when striper fishing -

I feel so much better now that my 12 step healing process has begun.

Best therapy for recovery is to go out and fish more. You will be back on your feet in no time.

Can I ask why you want to use a snap? Just because IGFA allows it, it doesn't mean it's the best method. If you catch a fish the tippet/leader is generally not resuseable and should be throw away, right ?

So, just tie up several loop on tippets with wire shocks (via Albright knot) and be done with it, catch a fish and throw it away.

It's a lot cleaner rig and you should get more bites.
