Jake-

I have a Tibor Pacific and a Sage 1390 RPLX ( I think that's what it is). Anytime you want to go let me know. Heck I might just let you borrow the combo without me

The guys are right, save your $. I got a deal on my rod and reel so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

To be honest, I can't remember what I paid. All I know is I have one and have never heard it sing

I think it's loaded with ~1000 yds of 80 lb tuff line XP.

I use a 12 weight Van Staal C-vex for offshore for schoolie blue fin, mahi, and sharks. I have found that a 12weight is plenty for out there i have my set up with 30 pound backing and a 30 pound tippet or i will change out my tippet so that some of it is 90 pound coated cable about a foot/ half long for sharks. I use a 12 weight St Croix's rod i forget what length it is but it is on the shorter side.

Jake... offshore is big money...
Top of the line with rod/reel/backing/line.. 2k and over.

IMHO.... Save your money and buy it once. You will need a large arbor reel.. the only ones I would even consider for serious offshore are tibor, charlton, and seamaster... Looking at a Charlton makes me dizzy... it is a work of art. All of those reel are pushing 1k.
If you are really really interested.. you will find people that are willing to help you out with their pro staff connections. A normal pro-staffer gets about 50% off... they can't give that deal to anyone.. but you are a kid interested in the sport.. so it's different.
For the rod... this is where you can save a little. It's a feakin broomstick. A 14wt is a 14wt.. saying that.. the loomis bluewater rod is a work of art. But, you are a kid trying to save some money and what I'm saying is that you can save a little with the rod... don't don't don't try to go cheap on the reel.
If you get a tibor/charlton/seamaster.. you will end up giving it away about 50 years from now and it'll still be in perfect condition. There ain't much in the world you can say that about.
When you have saved your money... shoot me a PM. I'll be happy to help ya out.
