Lure Size
Folks I need some help. I have been catching some big specks the last few weeks on top water plugs. I am fishing in a fairly small area and can cast from one side to the other of the creek. I am using a 5 inch zara super spook and a medium heavy bait caster. I would like to try to catch them on the fly.
I have a 8wt that can handle the fish my problem is what kind of fly to use. I would like to stay with the top water if possible. Is there a 4 or 5 inch topwater fly that ya'll can recommend? A very slowly sinking fly might also work. I need it to be big because the rockfish are killing the smaller baits. Any suggestions? Last edited by BYRD; 02-06-2008 at 12:35 PM. |

first off you have been fishing without me
I have some large poppers already tied that may fit the bill. As far as any thing else that you want - we need to simply sit down and tie some stuff - I have made this offer before. You have a floating line as I recall so a deceiver will work, will not sink fast and depending on how quickly you start the retrieve it will be close to the surface. Come over to the house and lets see what we can tie to mimic this lure

Siliclone... trust me... siliclone.. walk the dog.. dives a little.. sick sick fly. You can make it in any color you want.
What color spooks have been working? I'll send you a few... you can even plant a rattle in it... pushes tons of water. ![]() ![]() Clones on the top of the second image.... group I finished a week or so ago.. other flies are btds and small hollows

The Siliclone is about as close to a top water spook type plug you can find for the fly, and OMC ties some good ones. -D

BYRD-
I know OMC will send you one, but you should grab Blake and drive up to Kent Island for Tie Fest on February 16th. You will leave the place with more knowledge than you'll know what to do with. -D

I literally just got off the phone with fishsalmon. In fact I was opening my web browser as I hung up. If I can get a kitchen pass and don't have to work my part-time gig. I would like to join him for tiefest. He was telling me about it on the phone and it sounds like a virtual who's who in the fly fishing world. Some of the names he mentioned were iconic!!!
Hopefully I will be able to attend. |

Byrd...
It's a who's who... but in a town hall atmosphere. You can walk right up to anyone... guys you seen in the mags.. TV.. you name it.. and ask them whatever you want to know... I guarantee at some point in the day, you'll be eating lunch.. talking to a friend.. all of the sudden you'll notice Left Kreh or Bob Pop standing right next to you. You'll find out they are very down to earth and care deeply about the sport. That's the big difference in fly fishing. Any fly angler worth their salt wants to teach what they know to others.. They want to give back.. you don't find that in many other activities. If you want me to send you a few flies, just pm me an address... if you think you can go to TieFest, stop by and say "hi" and I'll hook you up with a few.. I run the show.. So just ask for Tony.. or go to the Addictive Fly Fishing Booth.. I am co-owner of that website... or the Mid Atlantic Fly Angler booth.. Sikorski will be around both of them too.
