Fly Selections.....what's in your box

I know this has probably been tossed around before, maybe by me???, but what is in your box?

Sizes?

Types?

How Many?

What for?

Where?

OR

what would you have in your dream box for your intended quarry.

Mahi's? Tuna? Reds? Spanish? Blues? Stripers? Croaker? Flounder? Trout? Bluegill? Bass?

I don't know Dave, you are starting make fly fishing sound like rocket science.

I don't know much about freshwater fly fishing, but from my experience with saltwater fish. Stripers will hit anything, any color as long as you are in an area where they might be. If you find them and can put any type of fly in front of them they will hit it. As long as it looks or acts like a bait fish it will work. I don't worry much about having a ton of back up flies in the same size and color. I have found I can change flies and colors and the fish still hit. Might be because our waters are never very crystal clear.

Weak fish seem to be the only picky fish and I find they like the yellow, whites, oranges and pink colors best. Have caught them on other colors but the ones above seem to be more successful.

Give me deceivers, clousers, poppers, mullet and bunker flies in any colors and I am good to go. Also all of the above in solid black for night even thought the colored flies work then too.

It will be interesting to see what others say. I love trying new types of flies and sometimes get on a streak and use it to death. Like in the fall I was using a 5 inch bunker pattern that worked till the end of the season. Don't think I took it off the rod other than to put on a new leader. I say don't be afraid to experiment. If it looks fishy in the water it will catch. Action of the fly and how you strip it is more important than color.

Since last fall was my first try...

Mostly clousers and deceivers - 1/0 was fine for the schoolies I went after. Did try a black rabbitt "eel" that worked well too. This year want to try for speckled trout so I tied some grass shrimp flies - size 2. Also hope to go after croaker so some size 2 deceivers and crazy charlies have come off the bench. i also have made some epoxy minnows 1/0 for the blue fish bite if i stumble across it.

colors, you name it i have tied it - some just for fun.

FishSalmon, 2 to 3 inch clousers worked great for the croakers on sinking line. Yellow/white and pink/white caught bothe croakers and weakfish and a fair number of fluke worked slow across the bottom. Good luck.

I'm with fishsalmon. Mostly Clousers now that I am just starting. Has anyone had any success with mylar tube flies? I've seen alot of great patterns I'd like to try out.
