One week away.. just about 100 anglers even right now for the tournament. We'll probably get a bunch more this week... Watch out everyone else.. I'm doing scouting fishing trips all this week. The fly guys are going to represent this year.

Yeah I'm going fly only this year....no Sp*****g gear at all for me.

last year I caught 3 on the fly and not a one over 15". The boat had 5 total.

Fishing with Tom Hughes instead of trying to find fish on my own this time...hopefully the conditions are better.

Even for those who don't fish....come on by and say hello if you get a chance. I'm sure there'll be a few suds and maybe some claws or something to munch on.

Especially when it is free...
Last year was the only year I couldn't fish it. This year, I told the wife 6 months in advance. She is fully aware of the possibility of having to come pick me up at the Jetty Bar.
This year fishing conditions are totally different. We have good clean water, big bait, and some decent fish within easy striking distance. So, it's just up to the fly guys to put a big one in the boat.
I hooked into something on sunday that took me into the ersters... I don't think it was a ray. Felt the head shake a couple of times.. I hope he is still there on Saturday... and his mouth doesn't hurt too bad.

OUCH....

Uuggghh...

Let me tell ya, I feel like someone put my ass in a pillow case, swung me around, and won a furniture breaking contest with me. 25+ knot winds, raging seas....couldn't get to 80% of our spots... Found the fish and still couldn't get down to them using 2 sea anchors. Jesus... we had these bastards dialed in. On wed, thrus, and fri...we caught multiple tournament winners each day... knew were they where they were and what they wanted. Then this cold front rolls through at 2am and someone turned the wind machine from high to blitzkrieg. We can do 20 knots... once it cranked from there.. we were thankful to make it to the beer and crabs. We decided on making the run in the early morning to our spot. Basically got stuck in the belly of the beast. Wind shifted more north than predicted...turned our lee spot into a washing machine.
In conclusion.... SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!!!! On the uptick, the guy who won is really cool. Plus, the prize was a guided trip on the bay. The winner doesn't have a boat and never gets to fish the salt (accomplished trout guy)... so.. if I had to pick someone to win, it woulda been this kid.
He works at Orvis and busted his ass to get my vortex repaired in time for the tournament. He overnighted it to me with 2 days to spare. As a thank you, I got him on a spare spot on another Capt's boat... Funny how life works..

Too bad about the wind. Nothing worse, especially for a big tournament. Takes the fun out of the competion and just makes everyboby tense. You gave it your best shot and that is all you can do. You were a survior!

We had the same troubles....I couldn't do much with the fly rod. The boat had 26 fish and not one over 16". Still had a blast.

The beer was cold and the crabs were full of mustard!!!
