Kings? Nope, not on the fly...but if I wanted to target one, I would go to the tankers anchored about 9 miles offshore (in green water fyi) and cast big streamers and bounce them off the sides of the ship (make sure it's OK with the crew to get that close... never had a problem before, but I usually have something lookin real good in a bikini on board and the guys are lined up on the rail like tigers at feeding time). Anyway, LET IT SINK... then make a sweep with your rod as a strip isn't long enough by hand. Two of these and let it sink again for a 15 tp 20 count and repeat. They will usually hit it just as the fly starts to move UP on a sweep of the rod. If there are kings in the area (which they are there like clock work) they'll hit as will a cobia. With the flyrod and tankers i am usually targeting cobia, not kings... but I am sure the above would produce. (kings are like bluegill in my book... not too difficult to catch and they save many a day on the water when things are slow).

Got a few ships on the hook and can't decide which one to hit??? Look for the one pumping their bilge / food waste / "whatever" that stuff is... THAT is the ship you want...and pay attention to the current.

how do you set the hook when fly fishing.. i no its different for each fish but i would just like to no a general idea..

when striper fishing i usualy set the hook w/ the line then once i know he is there i usually lift up a little on rod.... may not be correct way.. just need some opinions..

Pirmit was a 45 min. battle and one of the luckest catches I have had. That fish towed my boat all over the Marguises flats.
Dave I din't renemder what the record was at the time but all 3 were over 8 pounds. We were chumming with cracked corn along with a chum bag over the side. One of the coolest sights I ever saw when we through out the corn. One of the old local conks turned me on to it.

I do the same Jake. It's called a strip strike. If you use the rod to set the hook you're more likely to pull the hook away from the fish.

You can also just hold the line and allow fast fish to set the hook themselves as they grab the fly and run.

thanks dave.. a few years ago when i started fly fishing.. first winter striper trip of year. just got a cheap fly rod. fishing was incredible so i decided to throw out some thing that was supposed to be clouser?? on the second strip i had a bite and lifted the rod w/o stripping line.. not a good move... rod snapped in half.. ended up catching the fish with a broken rod. 30 inch striper. first fish on fly

Don't know if you boat allows it, but mine do...if you see the strike, I find that sweeping the rod, not "up", but to the side the opposite direction of the fish (if he comes in from YOUR left to the right, I will sweep back to the left parallel to the water, not "Up" works best. The strip/strike is what I use as well.

With mahi, you are usually along for the ride and trying not to get lassoed while doing the "tarpon-bow" as they go skyward. It can get real crazy real quick.

That's downright awesome! I've gotta get to the keys again soon.

I'm yet to break a fly rod on a fish. I always try hard to keep the rod angle low and fight with the but section.

Be careful out there, a broken rod can blind you.

rod/reel do you use?

flies?

line?
IN NC I do a lot of chuming with Bunker. Anchor the boat on a good rock or hard bottom and grind. I also will take a small gold hook on 5 pound test and place it in the middle of his back. Lower him down till he is out of sight and then lift him back up. If the King or AJ steals you bait the fish will never know that he was hooked. Get him all worked up and throw the fly. Watch you fingers...
