Fly Action from Cape May Inlet

Out this morning early with two brothers. One fly fisherman and one using spin. Tried the inlet rocks and it was like a washing machine with all the Mid-Atlantic fleet heading out to the canyons. Water was a cool 62 to 64 degrees. Fly fisherman got the nicest bass on a very large 6 inch fly that had a lot of flash to it. Was made for him by a woman fly tier at the fly show. Forget the name but she fishes the north part of the state and pretty well known. He was using 350 sinking line.

Brother picked up a bass on a swimming plug. Action was pretty slow. There was a lot of small bait around and we had to work for every fish we got with a blue here and one there throughout the morning. Most of the blues were decent size, close to 3 to 4 lbs but had a lot of followers that would not hit.

Picked up a good amout of bunker that came out of the net of a bunker boat that was working just off the beach. Figured I would put some in the freezer. Foul hooked and Live lined some around the inlet only getting it chewed up by blues.

Ended the morning with 2 bass and 18 blues and missed one other bass. Still tons of bait along the jetty but nothing feeding on them or pushing them and the water cool with still a brownish color.

Had a free night and got out with Andy for the SJCFA fly club. Left the dock around 5:30 p.m. with breeze from the southeast. Got nothing at the end of the jetties so we tried the inside for a while with the incoming tide and the boat wakes from the returning Mid Atlantic Tournament boats. We had a few bite offs with blues and Andy caught a small striper on a olive/white clouser on intermediate line.

At the boat his new 4 piece rod broke at one of the ferrels so he had to use one of my rods. We moved to the beachfront where we had a decent bite with big croakers and small blues.

As it got dark we decided to work the inside of the inlet jetty now that most of the boat traffic was done. We got some more bite offs with the blues and Andy got another striper to end the night.

Around 8:45 p.m. the wind kicked up pretty good out of the east and we called it a night. Blues, croakers and a couple of stripers. Had a fun night with good company
