Fluke on the fly

A few years ago, I was shown a pretty cool wading spot in De. We've perfected a style of fishing for fluke and it's really starting to pay off. Yesterday was a good day. Our plans to fish the bay collapsed due to the forecast that called for winds 25 to 30knts. So we went to the beach.. Not the best, but we had constant action until the wind made it impossible to feel the fly.
The setup is simple. Floating line, 8wt, 8 to 10 ft tapered, knotless leader, tandem fly rig. The top fly is negotiable. Yesterday, I used the color pattern cape may ray had for his weakie... chart and yellow.. my bud used a gummy minnow.. the bottom fly is always an orange over yellow clouser with tons of copper flashabou over the orange. We tie it without a tail...just a wing...as big and dense as you can make it....
Cast out, swing the flies in the current... keep in contact with the fly the entire time... once the swing is complete..begin to slowly strip in.. Most of the hits come on the swing or the first few strips. Pretty amazing to consistently catch large flounder in 2 ft or less of water. It's also very cool to watch the strike... you get to see it sometimes.
I met a guy from the South Jersey fly fishing club yesterday... nice talking with him and his wife. He was dying to get out there when he saw what we were doing. We had a few spare rods but he didn't have any waders... He was bummed... I really would have let him use a spare for the day. Super nice guy just getting into the sport... Gotta help the new guys when you can. We gave him some flies and talked about how we were doing it before he got on the ferry to go back over to Cape May.. Here's a picture.. We landed about 25. All but 2 were keepers.. We could have filled a cooler with 8 big fish but only kept 3.

Those mayworms have reall screwed up our old bite in the bay. Ed said there's been a lot less bait in the past few days. Flounder fishing seemed to be the ticket for yesterday... Get this.. we saw a 10lb triggerfish too. I was totally shocked. That place is a fish factory. Still haven't gotten a trophy weakfish.. in 3+ years of trying... but I always feel like it is just one cast away. We are going again very soon. Those big fish will stay there as long as the bait is around. They were puking up anchovy and they all had crab in their guts. BTW...tons of hermit crabs all over the bottom. Calico's haven't made abig showing yet.

Wow super! That was super fluke fishing and on a fly, I am impressed that was awsome fishing. Wish we had fishing like that. Most all the fluke we get are undersize in the back bay, whether using bait, bucktail or fly. We don't have any good sandy bottom areas like where it sounds like you were fishing unless you go north where there are some sandy inlets.

Will have see who you met from our club. All our members are good. Nice that you offered the use of a rod. I would of tried fishing till my legs got to numb to stand.

I worked for two hours yesterday off a crowed jetty, with high winds and was happy to get one 15 1/2 inch fluke on a clouser.

Wind is still honking here. Canceled this mornings charter and the aftenoon trip looks like a no go unless a the wind dies. Blowing 25 and higher gusts.

The wind is rockin here too. Was hoping to get out somewhere early this week but damn if the winds aren't gonna change those plans.

Might just have to sneak down to the coast again. Is there a magic Hermit Crab fly I should know about?

You know the fly dave... I dont get it guys but that orange yellow clouser is it. Out catches everything else 20 to 1 every time I go there.
First time i went to this place about 4 years ago..I had this guy with me that at the time was totally new to fly fishing. After about 4 hours of the skunk... and daylight getting away, I gave him a smaller version of the fly below. Last one in the box I had not tried. It was orignally a croaker fly. He caught 3 fish in 4 casts... one more in my box... thank god. Woulda had to have killed the little fellow..
Now.. with slight mods and tweaks.. it stands before you as a flounder pounder..

One More. Good looking flies. I have good luck in muddy water with weakies on Orange/white or Orange/yellow and the top one should work anytime any where. Wonder whether the fish see the orange color and think crab? Know orange/green works well too.

Ray, we have specualted the same thing. Without the tail ...flash on top.. color pattern... swing in current.. = medium sized crab. I've found countless calico's on the beach and in the stomachs of these fluke.
