Flats Toad Tying Instructions

Here's the fly I tied for the most recent swap.

I'm calling it a flats toad.

Hook
1/0 Gami SC-15 ( or other wide gap salt water hook)
6/0 flymaster thread (brown)
EP fibers
saltwater hackle
marabou
krystal flash( copper, uv)
1/80 oz lead eyes
Directions:

1.Wrap hook shank w/ thread.

2. Tie in a clump of marabou opposite hook point.

3. Tie in Krystal flash by doubling over and apply one half to each side of marabou.
Flash can always be removed on the water, but can't be added.

4. Add a pair of hackle tips. One to each side of the marabou. trim remainder

5. Tie in more marabou around existing tie.

6. Wrap thread behind and under material, between material and hook to prevent fouling and allow hook clearance for material. 3 wraps should be sufficient.

7. Take a bunch of a bunch of EP fibers and lay the tip across the hook shank just ahead of the last tie in. wrap material with a figure 8, then bring the thread in front of material and wrap thread to "train" material backwards by wrapping thread around the shank, away from the hook eye. Trim the EP fibers to so it matches on both sides of the shank. Tie in 5 or so bunches of EP to the shank, or enough to fill it up. Don't forget room for the eyes and the mono.

8. Tie in lead eyes ahead of your last tie in. ( raw lead or nickel color)

9. Cut approx 4" of 50 lb mono. Fold in half and make a crease at the halfway point. Place mono "V" across hook shank and secure one side at a time w/ wUse the eyes to help "train" the mono to the shape require for a
weed guard.

10. Whip finish. Trim EP fibers to make a tapered body. Add CA glue to the X's formed from tying in EP fibers. Apply head cement to thread wraps,eyes, and hook shank on bottom of body. Set aside to dry.

Great response. I figured I could probably figure out how it was tied with a couple of tries - though this makes it way easier. I was just puzzled with the EP fibers so this is great - thanks!!

Great! I'll let you know when I got them dialed in so it will be a catching trip and not a fishing trip.
