Attempt #2

Okay folks here is attempt number two. I used hair from the tip of the tail and I added a little section of krystal flash. I used much less hair and didn't crank down as hard on the thread. I would like the same info as before, what can I do better? and what did I mess up? feedback please.

Both the 1st fly and the 2nd fly together.

progress!!

When you cut the hair off of the tail hold it in your fingers about halfway to the tips and pull the short underfur out. I like to pull out the wild hairs too that don't lay in line w/ the others. I don't know if the fish care, but it make s a better looking fly.

On my clousers I tie in the wing in front of the eyes like you did in the first one. It just makes the profile more streamlined. I personally tie about twice the amount of hair in the wing as I do the tail. More hair on the hook point side makes the fly ride hook side up.

As you tie more you'll get a better feel for how bucktail responds to thread wraps, and you'll get better at making clean heads w/ minimal wraps.

looks a lot better..

one thing i noticed... remember when fishing a clouser the hook point is facing up in the water column. usually the bottom of bait fish are usualy lighter than the top or back of the bait. try switching around the colors.. hope that helps.

the fly looks good though

Guess what?? It will catch a fish.

The head is the hardest thing to perfect.

Dave's right, less thread and better coverage. Something you might try, before you wrap the head touch it with a lighter and burn off all the little fuzz. It might help.

I just opened this thread and before I scrolled through the replies I looked at the first picture and noticed that I completely jacked this fly up. I tied the chartreuse on the wrong side of the eyes.

Then I read ya'lls comments and have to agree. I see if I can get a thrid attempt up tomorrow or the next day.

On aseperate note. I actually bought real fly tying stuff last night. Got a pair of scissors and flat waxed thread in red, chartreuse, and olive. GOt some maribou and some flash. The first fly I tied I used metallic red A thread used to wrap rods.

Thanks for the input. Keep it comming. I also noticed a red X over the treuse in the first pic.

give me a call and stop by, let's spend a couple of hours tying this weekend. Let's work on your crab pattern for the swap. I think I will tie some small ones that might work on croaker this summer.

Remember the clouser I showed you and had the colors upside down as well - I have more than a couple that way when I got tired.

Now you have to combo the 2..
The head is actually better on #1. Crazy how things work like that..
You went to far back towards the point when tying down the chart bucktail..
Limits the action of the fibers.
You can secure almost any material with 5 good wraps.
Try this.. it should help.

Cover hook shank with 1 layer of thread
Lay 20 pieces of bucktail on the hook shank
Make two lose wraps around material..
Now pull from different directions.. going towards you...
going away.. up... down.. see how each time you pull from a different angle, something different happens to the fibers.. sometimes they will spin slightly..
When you pull towards you.. they should slightly flare then cinch down.. away.. rotate and fall apart..
After each pull.. don't lose tension and wrap three more times tightly.. see.. it ain't going anywhere is it?
Practice that with some sacrificial bucktail.. it will teach you a lot.
