Another Tough Night But Got A Few Bass On The Fly

Sat tight all day and decided to go on a scouting mission tonight with friend to see if we could shake loose some stripers on the fly rod. On the late notice he gave up his dinner to go fishing. We left the dock at 6:30 p.m. and headed right were we started yesterday. Worked beautiful clear water, loaded with baitfish as the tide swept it over a shoal for about 3/4 of an hour with out a strike or a sign of fish. Did have the dam black flies but the spray and long pants worked.

Moved to the area where we atleast caught some small bass and blues the day before. Worked it for a half hour with out a strike or sign of fish, but saw a lot of bait there.

Moved the very back shallow area 2 to 4 foot of water that was just loaded with bait. Again it was the same as yesterday. 4 to 8 inch blues chasing it about and no hits or signs of fish.

It was looking worst than the day before. As we started working around the sod banks I decided to try a popping plug. Worked it around the back sod banks as buddy flung the fly. We worked for about a half a mile with out a strike for either of us. Then Bam! I got a 24 inch bass that blasted the popping plug.

Worked for the next 15 minutes with out any strikes or signs of any fish and were about to leave the area, when I decided to try the popping plug once again as we cruised along with the electric motor at a good pace.

Found a spot where I had a swirling fish. Next cast I hooked another 24 incher and buddy had a hit. As I cast again and hooked up so did Peter on a Pink/white jiggie type fly. (Finally got him to try the old Pink/white fly) It blasted the fly and made all kinds of surface splashing before it took off. I netted a nice 23 3/4 inch striper for him.

I quickly grabbed my intermediate fly rod with a Pink/white jiggie and hooked up a nice bass and so did friend. We both got our fish boated and that was about it. Moon came out bright and we never got another hit on the fly. Even tried throwing popping plug around to scout for more bass with no luck.

Went to my usual go to spot where there was some current running and tried the old standby black fly with out a strike. With the bright moon we decided to call it a night and were back in by 9:45 p.m. Ended the night with 6 nice bass, three of which we got on the fly and buddy got home in time to scarf up what ever food his family left him.
