A week of Largemouths and smallies

Well Spent a week at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland with the family and some friends decompressing. Rented a house on the lake and too two boats (one for fishing and one for water skiing) up for the week of fun.

We hire a guide the second day there to help us get the lay of the land for the remaining week. Turned out to be a good move. Captain Brett Nelson of Ken Penrod's Life Outdoors Unlimited was a great guide showing us some local tricks on how to cast senkos under the boat docks to catch the fish as the mid day sun drives them for cooler water. We started the day fishing topwater as the morning steam was coming off the lake, spent mid day picking up fish under docks and pontoon boats and spent the late afternoon slow jigging deep grassbeds for some good size largemouths.

The day with Brent set up the rest of the week with good catches of 12-17" smallmouths, and up to 18" largemouths. No 5lb lunkers nut a good week in all.

Also got a chance to do some shooting at a sporting clay course which was a load of fun!

If you plan on spending any time at deep creek lake I would highly reomend hireing Brent Nelson to show you some tricks. He can be contacted at http://www.fishdeepcreek.com/ http://www.penrodsguides.com/ or bbnelson@comcast.net

PS be careful on offering to help your buddy unhook a squirrelly smallmouth or you may end up regretting it!

-D

Yup the good old DR D did it himself. Hurt like a bitch too. First thing I did was finish pushing it through so I could cut the barb off. although I quickly discoverd that my side cutters weren't in my tackle bag so I had to attempt to push the barb down and pull it back through. I should have taken a picture of the nice little chunk of flesh that was left on the barb, but I didn't.

Dang Dennis - you are having a heck of a year with your fingers and fishing!

Sounds like a great trip. Glad you got up there for some R&R. Thanks for the tip on Capt Brett.
