October 27, 2011

Our last four Tuna trips ranged from poor to excellent. On Friday night, we fished an area that had been very productive Tuesday and Wednesday. Unfortunately, the Tuna did not feed the night we were there and the weather made the fishing conditions tough. We ended up with few Tuna, landed some throwback Swordfish and lost some bigger ones.

We tried a different area on Saturday night and the fishing started out pretty slow. We landed a keeper and a throwback Swordfish. At about 4 AM, Tuna started to school under the boat and the bite started. At first, we caught Tuna for about 20 minutes and landed about 15. After that, there was a short lull in the action and then they really started to chew! For the next 2 1/2 hours, we caught Tuna on both bait and jigs. By daylight, the entire boat was limited out with Yellowfin and we headed home.

With high hopes, we fished the exact same spot Sunday night. The fishing was however, quite different. We waited for the fish to show up around 4 AM like the night before, but there were no signs under the boat. It was the same at 4:30, 5:00 and 5:30 AM. Finally at 6 AM, they started to show. We caught a handful of Tuna and lost some others, but they just wouldn't bite for us. We read Tuna under the boat right up until we headed in at 9:15 AM, but they seemed to have lockjaw. This was same condition many other boats in the fleet experienced that night.

On our Tuesday 30-hour trip, we headed back to the same area again only to find that the water had cooled down quite a bit. Due to the stiff winds and choppy conditions we anchored up early in the afternoon. We lost a Wahoo soon after anchoring and caught a Mahi about an hour later. Not much happened through the afternoon. As the sun started to set, baitfish showed under the boat and we read a few Tuna. We picked an odd Tuna until about 8 PM and then the bites picked up pace a bit. By about 2 AM, the Tuna were biting bait and jigs pretty well. We continued to catch Tuna until sunrise when we limited out on Yellowfin and headed home. Thankfully, the cooler water temperature didn't matter.

There is still good water within at the southern canyons and a new body of water has arrived at the Hudson canyon. The Tuna fishing is the best we have seen in the last five years and should remain good well into November.

We still have spots available for the trips on Sunday October 30 and for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights November 3, 4, and 5. You can view our entire schedule on our Trip Calendar page.
