Voyager Fishing Tilefish and tuna trip 10-22
The weatherman messed up on the forecast for our TILEFISH trip. The 5-10 knots ended up as 15-20. Despite the conditions we managed a decent catch of TILES. George Cassotis of East Brunswick, NJ won the pool with a 12 pound TILE. Mike Desimone and Vinny Faiella both caught YELLOWFIN tuna on TILEFISH rigs and Vinny also lost a nice tuna at the end of the day. I think that if the winds were lighter we would have done better and also been able to fish some deeper stuff for some bigger fish. We may schedule another TILE trip in early November.
Our last tuna trip was very good. We had a pick of YELLOWFIN in the afternoon with some blue sharks mixed in. After sunset the blue sharks took over and we had no more tuna bites. At night we headed off the bank looking for warmer water and possibly some SWORDFISH. We fished in the deep in 500 fathoms and 67.5 degree water. We had a couple of YELLOWFIN and then hooked a large fish. Charlie DeHart of Staten Island battled the fish for close to 4 1/2 hours getting the fish to deep color a couple of times. The fish was a very large tuna, possibly a BIGEYE or GIANT BLUEFIN. Unfortunately the line broke with the fish about 60 feet down. It was an epic battle to say the least. After losing the fish we headed back up on the bank, anchoring for the sunrise bite. The bite never happened for us so we left the area and steamed to where we had fished the prior afternoon. Within 10 minutes we had the first fish on, a nice YELLOWFIN. For the next three hours we caught fish on both bait and jigs. Many anglers had their limits including Jay Benson and Santo Matarazzo of Connecticut, Barry Goldman of Tinton Falls, NJ, Maria Gay of Brick, NJ, and Walter Fisher of Staten Island, NY. A number of others had two fish apiece.
This has certainly been some of the best fishing we have seen in recent years. Hopefully the fish will stick around for a while longer. We will be sailing for the remainder of October and into November. If the fishing continues we will be adding more trips to our November schedule.
