On Friday, I ran off to the Wilmington for a daytime troll. With the night bite as good as it is, the trolling bite has slowed but my party wanted to try it so of we went. The grass began 5 miles inshore of the tip at the temp break that went from 74 to 76. It was so thick that it was very difficult to keep a lure in the water and one guy suggested that we try mowing it! We fished down to the 450 line and cut across the canyon to the East wall. Flying fish landing on the boat, porpoises, 78 degree water, pilot whales, and not a sniff on my spread. Sooooo, I trolled across the canyon about 2 miles below the tip-( loads of bait, on both slopes by the way) and as we came into 70 fathoms on the west, SOMETHING hit my 9/0 2 speed loaded with 100 lb. line and 22 lbs of drag and proceeded to dump a couple hundred yards before the hook pulled. What a rush! I saw the strike and it was a big fish. It looked like someone dropped a Volkswagen on the lure.( Green machine behind a BIG mirror Bird) Perhaps a big eye, huge YFT, or a man in a blue suit. The fish never sounded but ran off straight back. Ah well, we sure did wake up. I then trolled in toward the spot where we had found the break through all the weed and hooked and caught 2 airplanes( Albacore). The day was made! Also, we had a white that was window shopping in the same area. What a gorgeous day off there! I hope that Mother Nature will allow us to get off there again soon since I have 2 overnighters next week. The chunking seems to be about as good as it gets, by the way.
