Sorry you guys had a tough day... I know Mike ran the heck out of that boat to get to where the fish had been for almost 2 weeks now. Worst part is where you guys got the one fish, it blew up around 5pm..... Seems like it has turned into an afternoon bite in that area. Cannot say you guys didn't put the effort in, don't think anyone ran anywhere near as far as you guys did. Go get em next time!!!
With the reports that were flowing for the past few days and nights the NJ beaches were just irresitiable to us. Been hearing 40-50 lbrs from the past few days lurking off the beach
After a long trek up via road, the boat finally arrived. After loading up plan b and some food. The live bunker were set free from the wells to sleep in the bait pen overnight.
4am came waaayyyy to early. After me not being able to sleep the 4 hours that I had available. I hate when I wake up every half hour hour to look at clock.
After gathering the crew up in the mary mobile and a brief needed stop for coffee it was go time. After gathering the last few things out of the truck we headed for the boat. Just as we walked up to the boat, we seen the bait pen with all the once live bunker corraled up in a ball on the side of the pen. They died overnight. The current was ripping thru the marina and we were not the only one to have that problem.
After debating the bait situation we decided just to deal with it when we got to NJ.
The trek 80 miles south was set out from the Housatonic River in CT. The slick calm sound allowed us to get there withing perfect time
After exhausting many sources and location for bait, we broke out plan b till we could get some bait on the surface to snag or net.
After trolling around for a short time, the bait started busting and boiling. After yanking all the gear out, of course the bait disappeared. After following this very same process time and time again. We finally had a few pieces in the boat.
Nothing happened all morning for us, with the tide spinning just after lunch time it would be all or nothing at that point.
After moving a tad north to the red church area, we set up once again. 1st drift notta
Set up on the 2nd drift I set my bait free to send him to japan half way out I felt him start to get nervous and jerky... ooo ooo here it comes, dropped it fully in to free spool, and bam fish on! This pork chop gave me a run for my money, dumping the spool down to the backing real fast quick and hurry, to the point we had to back down on him to get some line back on the spool. We quickly spun the boat around with me on the bow to get on him quickly between the rough water, and not knowing how well he was hooked. We got on him quickly and to the boat to learn he was a fattie not as big as we would of liked but did the job and put a fish in the livewell.
After monkeying around for a while longer we decided it was best to head back and get back in since we had a nice run ahead of us.
Between 3 scales on the boat, we had 3 weights on him from 20 - 28lbs. Again not a massive fish but it did the job just fine.
Thankfully the bass season is over for now for me, and now on to BIGGER and better fishing!!
Well the day didn't turn out as well as I hope and anticipated.
Nice Job Mary....Now it's time for some of these puppies for you...busting all over the Norfolk Canyon today...
Soon very soon... I can't wait
So happy the bass season it over with, I didnt want to do it from the start, but got the you have too.
Now we are in it for the long haul now that I am leading both divisions in 1st and the boat is in 5th and 35-40lbs out of 1st.. Maybe some day this event will end![]()
