Fishing Report

June 5

Nearshore Ocean and Bay

No doubt about it - the fishing is pretty damn good no matter where you go right now! Captain Rick on the full day headboat Keena Dale IV continues to target SEA BASS and action is steady with decent numbers of keepers. Pool winners run somewhere between 3 and 4 pounds, and there have been a few really nice fish - like Ron Capone's 5 lb 12 oz SEA BASS - a trophy in anyone's book! They even had a CODFISH yesterday, and Dan Williams landed a heartbreaker TAUTOG - it was over 12 lbs and since the season is closed - back over the side it went....... If you want some delicious white filets, you need to jump on the full day boat asp.....

The Long Range 16 hour trips have also been doing well - a mix of BLUELINE TILEFISH, SEABASS, LING, and a few GOLDEN TILEFISH tend to keep everyone busy and their coolers filled. These offshore trips offer the chance to catch a variety of fish not available inshore at a very reasonable cost. Check out the links for "special trips" at www.fishlewes.com Bring lots of lead - or you can buy it at the shop - we're talking 300 feet plus of depth, and I think they had one drop in over 700 feet of water! Give Capt Dale a call at 302-645-8862 to save your spot on the boat. Tiderunners Bait and Tackle WILL be open late on nights when the 16 hour trips are run.

The half day headboats are running on weekends, but we haven't seen the first CROAKER yet. When they arrive, the half day boat becomes the perfect idea for introducing the kids to fishing - lots of action and good eating! In the meantime, Captain Mike is picking at a variety of fish - a few flounder, some small blues, a drum or two, sharks, skates, etc. Still a fun trip, but don't count on filling your cooler yet. I'll let you know when the croakers start hitting!

Captain Carey on the GRIZZLY has been hard to find - seems like the Big Red Machine is always out fishing and, from what he told me - has been doing very well indeed. Recent trips have resulted in limit and near limit catches of SEA BASS, surprising numbers of CODFISH, a few real nice FLOUNDER and a good number of big BLACK DRUM of up to 80 pounds or so. He had one charter a week or so ago that caught no less than 12 drum and all but one were over 50 lbs!! Not sure what dates he has available - check out the link under "take me fishing" - the GRIZZLY has a proven reputation of putting you on the fish.

Surf

Few blues, occaisional stripers (most real nice sized) on cut bunker, decent bite of KINGFISH on bloodworms and or Fishbites, few flounder if you target them and the water is clear - kind of a slow to decent pick on a number of species. Sharks and skates if you care.....

INDIAN RIVER INLET

BLUEFISH have been wandering in and out of the inlet with the tides and a real nice STRIPER bite has developed in the rip in front of the Coast Guard station. There were a few days last week when the action held up most of the day, but best action on the linesiders seems to be at night. Next time you see an moving tide just after dark, you need to tell the wife you have a (fishing) fever and need to take a little ride to cool off. Be careful on those rocks - don't even try to fish off the jetties without the right footwear and a good dose of common sense.

HOTSPOT OF THE DAY
No question - the closest thing to a sure thing would be a trip on the full day headboat for SEA BASS. Them poor fish had nothing to bite for six months - Captain Rick is doing his best at putting squid in their mouths.....
