Nearshore Ocean and Bay

Apparently, the drizzly, breezy weather that was Hurricane Earl didn't affect the fishing at all. Captain Rick on the full day headboat returned yesterday with a fine catch of SEA BASS and FLOUNDER, with the pool winner being a flounder of over 6 pounds (caught on a rig and bait suggested by Tiderunners!). From talking to anglers on the boat, the verdict was steady, but not fast fishing - good number of throwbacks, but you were kept fairly busy all day. Also saw a little variety on the cleaning table - a few croakers and bluefish were also caught.

Capt Carey and the GRIZZLY charter boat has been enjoying steady fishing for both FLOUNDER and CROAKERS. They have also done very well offshore recently, with yesterday's catch including a 54 lb WAHOO and a number of TUNA. Great boat and crew - I went out with them a few weeks ago and did very well - I highly recommend giving them a try.

The half day headboat will sail daily for another week or so if they can muster enough anglers - call them at 645-8862 for more info. The fishing has been pretty darn good with croakers, a mix of small blues, trout, sea bass, triggerfish, sea robins, and dog sharks. The pool winner has usually gone to those few who rig up for flounder, and thats exactly what happened yesterday when a 24 incher took the money. Captain Mike also got into a school of blues yesterday and everyone caught some of these tasty little fighters.

Roosevelt Inlet and the Cape Henlopen pier have been hot for SPOT - catch the tide right and you should have no problem filling a cooler with these tasty little fish. I went last night with Taylor and Keith from the tackle shop and we did well on a mix of SPOT, small FLOUNDERS, a few SEA BASS, and some tiny SEA TROUT. There have been quite a few of these little trout caught - both from the pier and on the half day boat. Treat them gently and get them back in the water quickly - maybe we'll see some of those big Tiderunners again (worked the tackle shop name in there right smoothly, didn't I?) This is the time of the year when you can target some big flounder. If you really want to catch a nice size flounder, use a cast net and catch a live finger mullet. Hook him on a circle hook and let him swim around the pilings at the pier or tight to any other structure. Taylor from the shop lost a huge one last week doing just that - looked like a 5 pounder to him..... If you have a small child who wants to catch fish - get him some bloodworms and/or Fishbites, along with a pack of chartruese GULP baits for the flounder and take him to the pier.

INDIAN RIVER INLET

BLUEFISH have been wandering in and out of the inlet with the tides and a some STRIPERS have been caught at night.
Hot Tip of the Day!

Cooler full of SEA BASS? - go out on the full day headboat with Capt Rick. KIds? - take them on the pier with a dozen bloodworms and they will catch spot till they drop.
