Last Saturday a little before daylight the rain was blasting away at the 1960's era aluminum awnings outside my bedroom window. I shut the alarm off and rolled back into bed. Fifteen seconds later a little tug and a whisper came..."Daddy, get up...the alarm went off?" The Captain was ready! I whispered back "it's pouring sideways buddy and the wind is blowing." He disappeared without a word. About the time I closed my eyes again, after pausing to think how easily he gave up and how glad I was to get to go back to sleep, I was smacked in the head by the cold pvc of a pair of junior Grundens. The next words spoken were "That's what these are for". The Captain did have a point and if he was ready, at four years old, to fish in a downpour then who was I to lay in bed. After making some coffee we were on our way to the boat. I kinda figured it wouldn't last long and we'd be back in a few minutes after he felt the cold rain and wind. NOPE.
An hour later he was whining...NOT about the rain though...He wanted a "Casting plug"...The five bait rods I had set all around the boat just were "boring". I gave in again and tied a Storm swim shad(I hate them) on his rod and really did not expect anything other than a trip to the Doctors office to remove hooks from either myself or him. I don't think he threw the thing four or five times before I heard him squealing. "I GOT PETE DADDY! I GOT PETE DADDY!" Over the rail comes a spike spec and he looks right at me with a condescending grin and says "I told you I was big enough to use lures" Here is my four year old...Standing on the bow in full Grundens, pouring rain, one hand on his hip and the other hand holding the line and a 14" Speckled Trout telling me I told you I was big enough for lures. What the hell do I know anyway. I teared up with tears of joy. While not his first Spec, and by no means his first fish...It was an unassisted lure caught Speckled Trout...I was as proud as I have ever been of the Captain....
Until today....The same lure he used last weekend in the rain was no longer good enough today. We had three live baits soaking and he was back on the bow again with the Storm lure. I was ducking and weaving in between casting a mirror lure and watching the baits. He begged me and begged me for a mirror lure. He even caught the first Trout today on bait...
but still wanted a mirror lure. Well, I can think of nine reasons right off hand not to oblige him but eventually I decided to squeeze down all nine barbs and let him go for it. What's the worst that could happen? Yep, about fifteen cast later he started SCREAMING and the drag on the rod he was using did to. Here is the same condescending "I told you so Daddy" grin I saw last weekend....
Except this time it wasn't raining and I got a picture. I held back the tears today but I can assure you I was all smiles. I have created a MONSTER.
