There’s fluke where?-Fishing report-06-11-10-By Bob Misak
As of last report there were a bunch of bamboozled fluke chasers around, looking for anything over 18 and one eighth of an inch. It seems as though things are looking up, with some fluke starting to come from around the sailboat wreck in Double creek as well as some decent fish in Oyster Creek as well. The water temps are up enough for these elusive flatties to start showing up, and I saw some guys cleaning some fluke on the table at the shop on Sunday. My buddy Brian Lodge, who has the website garbagefish.com, just sent me an E-mail that had me in stitches. He had a ten lb. blue dog on his kayak last night, and as he was fighting it, a “good Samaritan” almost ran him over in a boat, capsizing the yak and everything that Brian owns. The funny part is that when he got the kayak upright, all that was left was some Power Pro wrapped around his foot and on one end, his rod; the other end, the mighty angry ten lb. blue. As far as boat drivers go, welcome to the Jersey Shore! I’m glad my little buddy did o.k. getting back home, all bull aside. Anyway, the big blues are still in the bay.
The surf lit up on the north end this weekend again and Shawn Taylor brought in another mega-cow at 41 lbs. 12 oz, exactly one lb. shy of Jason Delpalazzo’s leading fish. All these fish are coming from the north end on bunker heads, including nick Sabatino’s 2 - 20 lb. plus fish. The “Simply Bassin’ tourney is yielding some big, pretty stripers, and maybe Jason should head back out to try to bump his poundage up a bit; it’s on!
There are some awesome fluke being taken from the surf by guys who are chunking for bass, and Finally Rob Vallone got home from his North Carolina trip to nail a five lb. fluke down on the south end in the suds. Nice going Robbie, and welcome back, it ain’t the same without ya!
Outside the inlet the trolling is producing some bass but the bunker schools have been small and unattended by bass, but you can hook into some 10 to 13 lb. blues messing with those mini-pods. The sea bass fishing is still the mainstay of the head boats, and some ling are mixed in. As far as the weakfishing goes, I heard a vicious rumor that someone actually caught a nice weakie down off Beach Haven on the bay side, but I didn’t see the fish or the angler. If I disappear without a trace, then it’s true. But I have to say it is a shame where those tide runners disappeared to, and it could be back to “cycle time”, meaning we’ll see the next tide runner in about five years or so. Anyway, the shop is always stocked and ready with fresh bunker, clams, green crabs, and killies and squid for those of you who have a secret place to keep some fluke. So drop on in Barnegat Light bait and tackle; Basil brought all the chairs up front, including mine! It’s party time at the shop! I foresee a 9 or 10 lb. fluke this week. Good luck and great fishing to everyone out there.
