Super Sunday Toggin

I have some pics but more just a report and question. Capt Al and I went out toggin at russel's yesterday and caught 4 keepers and 20 or so throwbacks. Great Feb day that was slick ass calm and actually warm for a while. Typical togging day except for something that I noticed I want to ask about.

Does boat traffic effect the tog bite? We got there early and set up on a piece of wreck. Started catching imediatly. but after a while another boat showed up and decided to use our float to anchor up right next to us. Al being the class guy that he is never said a krass word but it did start getting a bit aggrevating because the guy did not have enough anchor rope to properly anchor so he kept motoring around the wreck. We noticed that the bite would stop everytime he would motor around us closely. and then he would wonder off looking for a high spot and the bite would start again. This would happen 5 or 6 times in the next hour. You can see how this would get annoying. Finally he found the hook and started fishing 30 feet from us. No big deal but as soon as he settled the bite started again. Have you guys seen boat traffic mess up a bite that is 50 feet below on a wreck. Just wondering if this was a fluke or normal.

100% affects the bite. Especially in shallow water. I fish several spots that are in less than thirty feet of water that are already saved on my GPS. I try to gauge the drift off to the side of the mark then pull in above it, kill the engine and lower the anchor. Definitely a difference when you catch it right the first time and don't have to start the motor up and reset. Good job on getting out there.

Bill,

I have an underwater video camera that I use when I wreck fish. I lower it to the bottom and watch how the fish react to different things. It's very interesting. The larger sea bass and tog are not nearly as aggressive as the smaller fish. There are many more big ones down there than you think. Ever see a scuba diver bringing up huge fish while you're catching throw backs? The big tog stay inside the wreck and will not move for anything. You have to drop the bait right on their heads to get them to bite. A mear 5 feet can make the difference. If they sense even the least bit of unusual activity, they run run deep into their hole. Even the sinker hitting the wreck spooks them. When you hook one you have to pull him off the wreck fast or you'll loose him. Your anchor rattling inside the wreck will affect the bite too. That's one reason I never use a wreck anchor anymore.

Wow that's some great information. I never thought about the wreck anchor or the sinker making noise and spooking the fish. I have always been afraid of using my good anchor around a wreck. I used it on Sunday and almost lost it. I set it well up current from the wreck but I guess it slipped and pulled into the wreck. It took Bill and I a while to get it unstuck. I haven't done a whole lot of wreck fishing but with fuel prices what they are I'll probably be doing alot more this year.
