After fishing off shore Monday before last and catching big chopper blues I knew it was time to head to the Triangles for them. After sitting in traffic at a dead stop on I-64 for over an hour, I met Sean Doran, Carolyn Brown at Owl's Creek and headed out there looking. The ride out was glassy slick, with just a little swell.
Once we got out to the Triangle we started off by trolling Stretches trying to locate them. It didn't take long and we found them, but they weren't staying on one wreck like normal, they were moving around a lot. After a few 35 inch fish we decided to anchor up and chum for them. I picked a spot pretty much in the middle of our bites and dropped the hook. We sat there and chummed and chunked for about an hour. We had one run. We also got beat to death by small sea bass. The whole time we were anchored there we could see blue fish and albies up on top splashing all around us. Well enough of that so back on the troll we went. It didn't take long for us all to box one at 37 inches. We lost a couple of real horses trying to get them to the boat. I still have no idea how one of those ill tempered beasts can shake off 6 hooks, but they can.
Once we had the blue fish done we moved to a small hang none of us had ever fished. We had a 5 gallon bucket full of hermits, jonahs and conchs. We started off with the hermits, and caught sea bass as fast as we could drop the baits to the bottom. It only took a couple of minutes to run through the half dozen we had busted up, so we switched over to the jonah crabs. Good call. We all started catching togs almost as fast as the baits hit the bottom. The really nice surprise is these weren't small togs, they were all right around citation size or much larger. At one point we had three all laying on the deck, landed one right after another, that were all over 10 lbs. The largest we caught was 11lb 14oz. As soon as the sun hit the horizon the bite turned off like flipping a light switch. We only had about an hour on that hang, but it was one of the best tog bites I have ever fished.
The ride in was slick calm. Beautiful ending to a great day fishing.
Just noticed the report after talking to you on the phone. Looks like you are running out of species that you can catch a citation in. Congrats on the stellar day. Leave those damn Bluefish alone. You would have caught your citation targeting Bluefins anyway. Crossing my fingers for the wind to die. It was cold on the creek this afternoon. Only caught two but only fished for a half hour, The Captain got cold fopr the first time ever. Talk to you tonight.
