Saturday I fished with my friend Joe on his 265 Grady White Express Lastchance out of Avalon, NJ. We broke TI inlet well before sunrise and began a following sea run South down the beach hitting all of the local lumps and bumps where we figured the Stripers may be hiding. After a little hunting we spotted a few birds searching an area and figured we would put out a trolling spread and search around. It wasn't long after this the birds gathered and started working the area hard and the depth finder lit up with Stripers. We put a 2 man limit in the box and began releasing fish steadily until 12:00 when we called it a day. The water temperature was 54.7 and trolling was the most productive method again. We also managed a few bites casting bucktails to fish on the surface under the birds when we could get close enough. However, we couldn't manage a bite with the bucktails or diamond jigs on the bottom so we kept it on the troll.
Sunday we were back on our boat with all 3 generations onboard. The weather was much nicer than Saturday and we opted to run right back to where the fish were stacked up on Saturday and they never left. There was absolutely no bird activity but the fish stayed pretty much in the same area maybe moving a 1/2 mile here and there. With plenty of meat left over from previous trips we only kept a couple today and released 12+ fish to fight another day. It's definitely nice to watch the big ones swim away to possibly become giants one day. Reports are still rolling in from friends fishing off Central Jersey crushing the bass with even a lot of bluefish still around. All things point to an extended season this year. Let's hope it happens!
Big fish released to fight another day.
Most fish were in this size class with a few larger ones and a few smaller models.
