In the fifteen years I have been involved in the bait and tackle business in NJ I have never seen an early bite like this. 05 was an excellent year but this one has started like gang busters. We have reports from shore bound anglers from reeds beach 52 stripers on clams. Kimbles beach 33 bass, Fortescue beaches many reports of double digit bass from the surf on blood worms. The boat anglers are seeing larger fish in the 20 to 30lb class mixed in with the shorts but they are also catching huge numbers of fish. Boat areas are the flats off kimbles beach, Bug light, thompsons beach all along the flats guys are catchin stripers. I have been following the reports on this site and others and this has caught be totally by surprise. We never started striper fishing until the moon tides in April in past years at the earliest but that was back when we almost always started the season fishing the Rips mostly and then sometime in early May Brown Shoals-Brandywine ect with eels or bucktails with mackeral strips. Live and learn as I thought the water was way too cold to get the stripers to feed plus the only ones around this early would be those small resident fish probably all in back bays where the water warms up the fastest. I was wrong as it seems to be getting better every day now with more and more keeper size fish and pretty exciting for those that have been able to get in on it.
