    Striper

    Howdy All -
quick question for anyone that has more knowledge on this subject than me, which at this point is just about anyone

I'd like to try my hand at Striper fishing this year and my research has been scattered all over the net with little consistency in info from many different sources.

1st off I fish out of Ocean city NJ. Where is some of the better locations around here for striper? Whens the best time of year to go after them? And the biggest confusion i have is what bait?

    thanks to anyone in advance.

Hey mike thanks for stopping in

Fall is going to be the best time for you to get some great striper action. There is a guy named brian who ownes a charter company called iowa fortune and ill tell you what the man catches some nice fish !!!!

I have found over the years one of the best ways to learn is to learn skills from others and some times taking a charter is a very good idea ! Brians website is http://www.iowafortune.com and he would be a great guide to go out with !

That is just a suggestion and by no means am i saying you have to take a charter i just feel its a good way to learn .

This fall try to catch the out going tides around rainbow channel along nith street bridge . Set up at dusk anchor a safe distance from the bridge and get some live eels or clams. They both seem to work best for me atleast but im sure others can give you better insight then me .

I will get you more info and we will try to get you catching those stripers this fall !

    thanks
    john

    Stripers in the Fall.

I do very well with stripers. I look for bottom contours on a chart and use my sounder along with GPS to help anchor over the desired area. I like anything that looks like a change in depth and runs in the direction of the tide or the flow of fish. Once there, I anchor with a chum log weighted down to the lower depths where Mr. Striper feeds. Get FRESH bunker and cut into 1 1/2 " chunks and use # 8 striper hooks with enough weight to just hold bottom. I use Penn 750 spinning reels only with a max of 30 # test rods. line also. I only use old bait for chunking as the stripers will find the fresh fast! Never ever had a skunk striper trip yet using this method. As the season gets near, I will post more. I just wish I knew what a WeakFish looks like?lol

    Mike,
You will want to wait till the water temp is 64 or lower. Last year we were catching right under the 34th st bridge. Also at the condo's near tennesse ave. the water moves fast there. And on good days in the fall drift off the beach in 25 to 30 feet water. I find chucking with bunker and use half a bunker on the hook. Must be fresh not frozen.

OCFisher, There is lots of ways to catch bass around OC. You can jig and troll deep diving swimers off the beach front in the late fall. Plug the surf almost anytime of the year. The shadow lines of the bridges hold fish almost year round. Fish small poppers and jigs along the sod banks in the summertime. Fish Bait in the inlet spring and fall. As for bait, stick with fresh clam, fresh bunker chunked, eels, live bunker, mullet, spot....
