SSFFF Back Bay Tournament Poll
I've been kicking around the idea of getting a 100% donated tournament together for the ssfff fund. I've been thinking about this all winter. As many know, probably all know...the Summer Flounder NEED our help in a bad way. Our season will be limited this year...but could be completely shut down in 09.
I'm posing a question here...simply YES or NO.... Would you be interested in fishing a 100% charitable Tournament if you knew all the proceeds went directly to the ssfff fund to take place in Cape May area? I am in the begining stages of this, I have reached out to some charter capts, some back bay guys, and thus far have gotten a pretty good response. All of which said to post it here to get the publics opinion. So here is what I have now(Still VERY Early stages so additions would happen just trying to get an idea of publics opinion now), it would be limited to Back Bay waters only. $25 a person, max of 4 people per boat($100 per boat) free t-shirts..hopefully a bbq somewhere, some beers...my goal if we can get this off the ground, to have 15-20 boats entered. That would be a great donation to the SSFFF cause. If we could get more boats...obviously that would be great...if not thats fine too. This is basically a "fun" event, the prizes would be for heaviest fish...not sure how many prizes, they would be donations from Restaurants, Charter Boats, Bait Shops...etc anyone who wants to help out basically. Possibly bump the price to $30 per person with $5 going into a calcutta so there is a small $$$ for the people who think that is needed...this isn't the idea behind this event. Again I am just feeling out to see what the overall response would be. Me personally....I think it would be a great way to get money raised for basically our only chance of a future with this fishery, and many others for that matter. If we can get a decent showing on the poll then it is worth it to give it a shot and see what we can raise for this thing. Anything is better than nada! Thanks for your time... Think of this like a "pre election" votes...need the votes to see if it's worth it...

I doubt that's the case...there have been only twenty eight views...very likely none of them live up your way. I viewed the thread and did not respond to the poll simply because you are to far North for me to participate in the tournament. If I lived up there I would certainly participate. Good luck as I think it is a worthy fight. I hope you make some progress.

Even though you may not be able to participate in the tourney, you can still support the SSFFF. This closure would effect the entire east coast. So don't just wish us luck in this fight...........join in. If you think they'll stop at just the fluke........you're sadly mistaken. www.ssfff.net

Don't for a second think I am not aware of the regulatory beat down rec fisherman are recieving every year. It is gonna come to the point where you won't be able to keep a damn thing. Seems like every year the limits decrease and the mins increase with very little rhyme or reason to it. Our Flounder regs change like the weather. Don't even get me started on the four Togs per person this year. I am told we may see a limit on Croakers in the near future. I could go on and on but will not here. How would you like me to join in your fight? Explain. I will be glad to do what I can and in turn would like for you to fight the VA regs. Deal? My initial post was to help move the thread along not hijack it. Hopefully some of the CapeMay crowd, who this issue hits closer to home with, will chime in and help you guys as well. Again, I wish you guys luck in the fight. By the way...How do you like my new signature? Holwachagot Last edited by HOLWACHAGOT; 02-02-2008 at 02:25 PM. |

I think it's a great idea but why do it just in the South, why not work out a port by port system or mini-tour. You could even go out of state since this isn't a strictly NJ problem. Something like the JCAA tourney.
Holwachagot, the best thing you can do is spread the word about SSFFF and push people to donate. It's honestly a case of money talks, BS walks. They are fighting NMFS on a science and research level and need to pay for it, and also lobbying to help get the MSA changed to fix the problem. Both cost money. The other thing that is helpful is writing local congressmen and senators to provide support for a review and amendment to MSA. The tough part there is that even if the affected states are on board, the majority of congress comes from other regions where this isn't an issue. It's gonna take some lobbying and pressure to make that change happen. The big thing is that a change in MSA would look at the hard rebuilding targets and look for room for compromise when the economic impacts aren't justified by the situation. This has far-reaching implications in other fisheries.
