We've had a very good spring run of bottom fishing here out of Little Egg Inlet. The bottom temperature is very warm for this time of year, reported by divers to be in the 50's.
We had one of the finest runs of spring togging I've seen in some time this past April. The 2nd half of April wasn't kind to us weather-wise, but the first half was exceptional, capped off by a special Easter Sunday trip I ran. Daryl, Dave, John, Mark, Mike and Peter kept a boat limit, between 125-150 pounds of fish, quite a haul for a shortened holiday trip only allowing 4 fish to be kept per person. I weighed fish at 10 lbs. 3 oz., 9 lbs. 14 oz., 8 lbs. 13 oz., 8 lbs. 6 oz., 7 lbs. 13 oz., and 7 lbs. 7 oz. There was still a 1/2 box of 5-7 pound fish that I didn't even bother to weigh.
The tog fishing has held up in May, but the smaller fish are a lot more active now with a lot of egg laden females (and are releasing the majority of them). On May 6th, Dan captured (and released) a 26" tog that hung the scale well over 13 pounds. Congratulations on a great catch.
The big humpback sea bass (2-4 pound fish) are now biting good in 80' of water, and I expect we'll be catching some in 60' this week. The fish are moving ashore to spawn, and we'll have another 2-3 weeks of good fishing before the bite will slow over the summer. Look at this 3.5 pound beauty taken by Andrew this past weekend.
