The surf fishing action continues to be on the slow side, and it will slow down even more starting Monday, Sept. 8. The reason for this is that fluke have been making up much of the action on the beach, and the season for summer flounder ends on Sunday, Sept. 7. Although most of the flatties being caught have been under the legal 18 inches, some keepers have been caught. Betty and Nick's Bait and Tackle in Seaside Park reports that regular customer Bob O'Brien picked off two keepers recently of 19 and 21 inches. Other than the fluke, some bluefish are being caught. Grumpy's Bait and Tackle reports that Eric Polovina had a mess of blues to 7.1 pounds on cut bunker and plugs one night last week around dusk. He was fishing just north of Seaside. Polovina also picked off a pair of big fluke to 4.7 pounds in the surf, one on bunker and the other on Gulp. In the bay, the crabbing is showing a slight improvement. There are snapper blues and some kingfish in the bay along with schools of spike weakfish.
