Post Southern Ocean County fishing zones

The schools of big striped bass that had taken up residence off Long Beach Island the past two weeks have moved north to provide some excellent trophy bass fishing. Boats of every size including many kayakers are taking advantage of the big stripers feeding under the massive schools of bunker. The fishing from the beach did not match the great fishing for the boats although some nice bass were taken on both fresh bunker and poppers. Betty and Nick's Bait and Tackle reports that Todd Callan landed a 52.8-pound bass on a snagged bunker from his kayak on Saturday. This fish goes with the 19-pound bluefish and 12-pound weakfish he has already caught this spring to make for a good year already. Grumpy's Bait and Tackle weighed in a 56-pounder for Dave Digaetino from a kayak and a 52-pounder for Zach Paone from the beach. The Dock Outfitters in Seaside Heights reports Steve Soma had six fish one day recently up to 40 pounds. The crabbing off their back dock continues to improve with catches averaging two to three dozen for a day's work.
