Snakebit

A few months ago, while reaching my hand up under a Sodbank pulling out fiddlers, I was informed that I am crazy. I begged to differ. My response was that not being a chickenshit did not make me crazy. Granted, I may be several sandwiches short of a picnic, but not being worried about fiddlers pinching me was no proof of insanity. "Aren't you scared of snakes?" was the reply. "They better be worried about me" was my reply. Well, less than an hour ago, I got bit: and not by a fiddler crab. At least my point was proven that I will get the last bite...when this sumbitch latched onto my hand I beat the ever livin dog snot out of him. Told you they better be worried about me I thought to myself ...Thank God is wasn't a Cottonmouth.

OK, I'll confess. It scared the tar out of me, but made for an interesting morning to say the least. Once I realized the blood trickling from my hand was a mere scratch and not two holes I felt much better.

At first I thought it was a Cottonmouth and nearly panicked...Only a Hognose. I would have made funniest home videos for sure had someone caught it on film. Gonna skin and salt the bastard when my son gets home from school.

I learned my lesson just now! No more fiddler chasin' under banks for me. I don't mind a snake all that much, but I don't think my heart can stand the excitement!
Glad he wasn't the wrong kind bro!

Third time I have been bitten in my life. The first time by a black snake, second time by a green snake(niether broke the skin)...both as a youngin messin with them. This one scared the stuffing out of me. He is skinned and salted and my son is ecstatic about his new trophy.

gee thanks that brought back memories I hate snakes, i hate em so bad i was sleeping one night and was having a nightmare about em, bad part was right before that i was dreamin about well something else and my hand grabbed something shoot almost made myself half a man i did add a couple of inches though.
seriously i used to not be afaid of em at all till i got bit, back when my son and i used to coon hunt i thought it was more comfortable to hunt in my deck shoes well my luck ran out i got bit not once, not twice but three times all different occasions. nver got sick or had to get a shot it feel like a mild flue though, but where the fangs went in the skin rotted out like a funnel. the docs said that i had to be immune. well after the third time I found it more comfortable to wear my boots and snake chaps

forgot to add what kind of snake= copperhead

I have read fifteen articles about Hognose snake since this morning and they all claim the bastards very rarely, if ever, bite. The general consensus is they are bluffers and will strike very rarely and almost never in defense of themselves. I did see two articles where pet owners were bitten and one showed some viscious swelling all the way up the guys arm. The idiot in that article claims the snake was munching down on him. It was his pet and he had a "hard time removing it without hurting the snake". Lemme tell you this, I had NO trouble removing it as I instinctively flattened his ass from the neck up. My thumb is a little swollen but hardly scratched. I am wondering if I have identified this snake correctly. I am pretty sure I have but, the head was disfigured about 1/1000th of a second after impact. Could it have been something else? If so what? The snake had rows of very small teeth lined up going into it's mouth and larger teeth in towards its throat. These larger teeth did not get me. I have a feeling I got very lucky. I immediately smashed the snake against the rim of the bucket busting neck and jaws into pieces when I did so. Evident from the crooked lower jaw in the pic. I think I am cured of reaching blindly into holes in the sodbank. My wife thinks it is NOT FUNNY. Jackson already wants to hang the skin up and the funk is not gone yet. I hope you guys got a good laugh out of this, I know my son did. Krikey-I have a new found respect for the crock hunter.

It's not a hognose
It's a common water snake

Bands look lighter when they're wet
I get them all over my beach in the summer

This snake doesn't have the hognose, up turned nose
I used to have a hognose for a pet when I was a kid

Hognose

Sent your pic's to a friend that is a herpetologist, he said definitely not a hognose
FYI, you're cool. Water snakes are just plain mean
Hognose rarely ever bite

Thanks Ravens. That is exactly what it was. I figured I flattened his nose when I smushed him. Very cool. Kind of sorry I killed the little guy. At the time I just reacted. See Seabiscuit, nothing to worry about...you can still go fiddler hunting with me.
