“Signs of life”-Fishing report-10-08-10-By Bob Misak

The early part of this past week was rainy and raw, and the east wind drove everybody off for a couple days. But on Wednesday we woke up to blue skies and a brisk west wind, and I jumped on the nice weather to go do some tog fishing over at the condo docks. The blackfish were very happy and I caught a keeper fish at 15 inches on my first drop. After a couple more togs I was blasted by a 21 lb. bass on light tackle and unlike me to be unprepared, I had no net and neither did anyone else over there. I managed to walk the fish three and a half miles to a safe beaching area and did get the fish at my feet. The bass are here! There were two other keeper stripers also caught at the dock this week, all on green crabs, believe it or not. I told my brother-in-law Don Golden of my early run linesider and he took to his Parker and went out spot fishing in the inlet on Thursday, nailing 5 fish but only getting two fish into the boat, both at 30 inches. It seems as though the east winds drove some colder water into the inlet and the bass are beginning to respond, just in time for the 55th annual L.B.I. Surf Classic, which begins on Saturday, Oct. 9th. The big blues also made a showing in the inlet and chopped off some of the spots that guys paid good money for. Spots are the ticket to getting those early season bass to respond and Basil and Nick have a ton of them ready to roll. The bunker boats should be loading up as we speak since I got a call of bunker pods being found off of Bay Head, so it’s shaping up to be a great weekend out in the inlet and on the beach. Anglers on the beach in Loveladies tell me that they too are getting cut off by big blues, and again, the front side of a good blow always seems to turn on the lights. There are reports of great weather for the weekend and I think that we’ll most definitely see some 20 lb. fish hit the scales as derby 2010 gets under way. We had a northwest blow on Friday and that’s my favorite bass fishing wind, as the bass on the south jetty respond well to it. Guys are catching some 30 inch fish on white bucktails off the rock pile and the togs are just piled up out there. Looks like we’ll see some increased participation throughout the weekend, and the head boats are already out there nailing sea bass and blackfish, but oddly, most of the pool winners are big, fat triggerfish. This is probably due to the warm water temps that are sticking around until we get a good run of 30 degree nights. Speaking of nights, the dudes that are plugging the surf at night are also starting to see plenty of action as the surf calms down enough to toss poppers and throw chunks. The fall run is quickly getting under way, so go over to the shop and load up and hit the jetty or the beach on the outgoing tide, the fish are there and they’re hungry! This is the time of year when some poor unsuspecting soul loses his rod to an 80 lb. drum, so hold on tight! There is still another week or two to cash in on the blowfishing before they high-tail it out of here, so we’ll see you down at B.L.B.T, and good luck and great bassin’ to everyone, and be safe, eh?
