Shellfish beds across the region that were affected by Hurricane Irene were reopened on 6 September, after tissue testing of the shellfish show they meet federal health standards.
The state Department of Environmental Protection closed shellfish beds 27 Aug., in preparation for Hurricane Irene. The beds were closed due to concerns that clams, oysters and mussels would be contaminated by storm-damaged waters.
“The shellfish industry is very important to New Jersey’s economy,” Commissioner Bob Martin, said in a press release issued 6 September.
