Block Island to Cape Hatteras
The coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut is currently 52°F. The coast of New York and northern New Jersey warms to temperatures ranging between 53 and 56°F, with the central New Jersey warming to 57°F. The coast of Delaware has a sea surface temperature of 60°F, with the coast of Virginia and North Carolina warming to 64°F. The Chesapeake Bay is reporting slightly warmer sea surface temperatures of 66°F. Looking off coast there are two warm water eddies off the coast of Delaware. The northern eddy is smaller in diameter but carrying warmer water temperatures of 66°F. The larger, more southern eddy is carrying sea surface temperatures of 64°F. In addition, off the coast of North Carolina, it appears that a section of the Gulf Stream maybe pinching off. This extremely warm water eddy is carrying water temperatures of 72°F. There is a high water system forming off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard that is currently 15 cm above sea level. There are also slight sea surface depressions in the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware Bay that are both -5 cm below sea level. The chlorophyll productivity map shows high levels of phytoplankton productivity along the coast of protected bays and inlets.
