Block Island to Cape Hatteras
The sea surface temperature along the coast line of Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, and Vineyard Sound is currently between 70 and 73°F. The sea surface temperature in Long Island Sound as well as the coast of New Jersey and Delaware is currently between 73 and 76°F. The sea surface temperature off of the coast of North Carolina has increased to 77 to 80°F. The Gulf Stream carries sea surface temperature between 75 and 80°F along the north Atlantic coastline stopping at about 40°N. The chlorophyll concentration map shows high levels of phytoplankton productivity along the coastline of Rhode Island and New York. Since the satellite image does not extend to the southern half of the image, it is impossible to predict what the levels in this area may be like. There is a sea surface low that wraps around the coast of Cape Cod Bay and Long Island that is currently 15 to 20 cm below sea level on average. There is a sea surface high in the mouth of the Delaware and Chesapeake Bay that is currently 30 cm above sea level. There is a small sea surface low forming on the coast of West Virginia that is currently 20 cm below sea level. The remaining coastline is relatively flat except for a sea surface low off of the coast of North Carolina that is currently 25 cm below sea level.
