Went back last night to Richland with an Annapolis buddy. We found some birds sitting on the water, and jigged beneath, immediately started catching trout. Gold stingsilvers seemed to be the hot ticket. Fish were mainly spikes, but a few would have passed for legal. Wanting to find some breaking fish, we left Richland and headed down towards the area between Hollands Island and 72, where Jmercer and I have been finding breaking fish on a regular basis. Found some, but there were three other boats out there, two of which were trollers who kept plowing right through the center of the birds. There's a lot of water down there, so feeling crowded, we left and headed back towards Richland.
On the way, we noticed a military helicopter just hovering over the water, about 200 yards up. He stayed in the same spot for quite a while. He then moved and hovered over Hoopers Island for a little while, then moved back out over the water and just hovered some more. I've never seen that, anyone know if that is some sort of military drill or training?
At any rate, back at Richland, tons of bird activity, but it was just terns and pelicans picking off silversides. However, good marks on the bottom, so we started jigging, and began catching more trout. I don't know how many we caught, but a bunch all on stingsilvers. I kept two, a 16" and a 18".
Quick tackle note, my stingsilver with the single hook accounted for bigger fish, while my buddies treble hook stingsilver accounted for more fish, but smaller. Also, set your drags pretty tight, my buddy kept losing fish, he would hook, while when I hooked up, I would usually get mine to the boat, we found out the difference was the drag set, mine was tight, his was loose. Once he tightend down, his catch ratio improved.
