Well, we were supposed to fish out of Mystic on Jim's boat in the CTF Blackfish Bash this past weekend but it got postponed due to nasty weather.
So, I asked Arctek Jim and New Jersey Ron if they wanted to come up to "my" grounds and fish anyway, so, of course they wanted to still fish, and they showed up on Saturday morning (10/15).
We got a nice late start Sat. morning in the steady rain, went and got crabs, and launched by mid-morning. Headed down the bay (Narragansett Bay) to test out the bay entrance for the supposed "up to 8 feet" seas. I have a spot outside the bay that I like to fish. As soon as we get to Beavertail, the easterly swells hit us and yes, they were 8 feet![]()
After hitting several of them, and seeing the waves breaking off Beavertail and right over Whale Rock (an old lighthouse tower base), we decided to try out a few backup spots in the bay![]()
Anchored up on a little piece of structure at Dutch Island and after a few minutes the fish were biting solid, each one coming over the side getting bigger and bigger. Nobody had been fishing all week really, so I had no idea how it would be.
We pulled well over 50 fish over the side, with a few nice honkers in there up to 9#. Not bad considering the VICIOUS swing we had all day (wind blowing against the strong tide, plus the current splitting at the point we anchored at). Lost quite a bit of gear, due to the ledge. It would drop off from 14' to 27' LOL. Went thru some Gammys, leader, and sinkers, LOL.
Rained most of the day, and blew a good 20 kts with gusts higher, but we finally saw the sun late afternoon for a nice ride in. The wind laid down for a bit on the ride in (the lull before yesterday's blow).
Late morning I get a call from my wife that she's standing knee-deep in our backyard in water, and that my garage has 3" of water in it, and shit is floating around all over the driveway and yard. Was really something to see when we got back, considering it was all dry when we left. The nearby river/pond had overflowed itself and decided to visit worse than we ever had. It was something. Niagara Falls is in our basement right now![]()
Here's some pics of the fish....We had them on a saltwater & ice bath all night and cleaned them Sunday morning, so the coloring is a bit off, as they were ice cold in the pics.
