“Pickin’ away at em”-Fishing report-07-12-10-By Bob Misak
The fluke fishing picked up just a bit this past week and weekend with some pretty decent fish coming from the deeper waters of the inlet. We fished the 6th st. dock on Wednesday with my old buddies Mustache John (if he shaves he’ll just be John) and Ray Frazier, and Ray nailed a nice 7.5 lb. flattie a day or two prior. I ended up with two fish at 20 inches and another at 18 and the fishing in front of the lighthouse has been great. The guys drifting by that area told me of one boat yanking two 6 lb. fish over as well. Mustache John also had two decent triggerfish this week, so the triggers are right on cue coming inshore. The tog season comes back in on Friday the 16th, and everyone’s just chomping at the bit knowing that there are big white chins on the jetty rocks. The limit will be one fish at 14 inches until November, and the dunes have eyes, so I would heed to the limits. The shop has plenty of green crabs and I’m quite sure that they will remain stocked up for the tog fishing. They also have some of Basil’s freshly ground clam chum, and I know it’s fresh because I snuck into the shop one day and Basil was eating it. Sometimes I worry about that boy.
Outside there has also been an increase in the keeper fluke coming in, and the sea bass fishing is slowly getting better, with some bigger humpbacks coming in on the head boats. Speaking of which, the head boats will be doing a bit more wreck fishing with the blackfish season here, and no matter what you catch on a wreck trip its good eating. They get everything from tog to sea bass to triggers to ling, especially in the next three months of the season. The bass fishing has slowed to a crawl, but the other night there were herring being gobbled down by some bass right under the lights of the lighthouse. The feed was fast and furious, and in a moment’s time they were gone. Every once in a while during the days of July we see an unsuspecting soul fishing with a small rod, and it gets yanked out his hand as he gets wailed by a 40 lb. striper. The blue fishing outside has also been off the hook with giant gators being caught at will at about 15 to 20 miles out. Speaking of off shore, there are some big eyes in the hundreds starting to surface, and I saw a pic of a real nice 250 lb. fish caught by a young lady. Nice catch right there. The surf fishing is getting a little help as well with some king fish rolling into the finger jetties on high tides. If you get any sand worms, that’s the ticket, but bits of clam will work as good or better. The small fluke continue to litter the bottom of the surf, and guys are catching like a fluke every cast, sometimes two. The thing is that not many are of keeper quality; yet. We’ll get someone coming to the scales with a ten lb. fluke off the beach eventually; it’s inevitable. So we’ll catch you down at Barnegat Light bait & tackle, and can someone go get Basil his lunch? Good luck to y’all.
