Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE
Sept 5th, 2011
Fishing Report by Sue Foster
It took a few days for the fish to come back after Hurricane Irene, but yes,
they came back! The evening after the storm lots of stripers were caught at
Indian River Inlet in the wee hours of the morning. Blues and stripers hit
the Route 50 Bridge. Snapper Blues hit the surf. A few days after that, we
heard news of flounder coming back into the bays. One man fishing the Bridge
on Sunday said he caught 40 throwbacks and some blues. Crabbing has been
good as well.
(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. The state set up the tackle stores in Ocean City and anglers can now
buy their MD licenses and boat license stickers at both our locations.)
Please bring cash to buy licenses. If you want to buy and print your license
online, I have all the links where you can do this at the bottom of this
report.

Surf fishing was very good this past week on snapper blues. Sand sharks,
big rays, and some larger sharks were also about. A few spot and kingfish
were also reported.
Libby Kelly of Oyster Bay Tackle fished the Delaware State Park on again and
caught more bluefish. She was using whole finger mullet on a mullet rig.
Local, Kenny, had 4 nice blues on Friday morning in Ocean City. Local Anita,
had blues up to 18 1/2 inches in the Delaware State Park.
"SharkHunter" posted on Stripers Online: "Sat-Sun Del Seashore State
Park....lots of bluefish up to 15 inches. Caught mostly on fresh finger
mullet / mullet rigs. Some of the smaller blues hit a small piece of bait on
a small hook.
"
Anglers on Assateague beaches were having a hard time finding fish after
the Hurricane. Sounded like northern beaches were a little better.
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

We had a few days of rough surf this weekend. If you find it hard to hold
bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Flounder!
We had reports of decent flounder fishing days after the storm. It did take
several days for the water to clean up and for anglers to start catching
fish. Wayne McPartland went out a couple days after the storm and caught
short stripers and lots of blues near the pilings of the Route 50 Bridge. On
Thursday, he took Pat McPartland from E. Northport, NY out and they caught a
keeper Striper near the RT 50 Bridge using Live Spot during the slack tide.
This picture of the cobia is in our Photo Gallery under Ocean City
Bay and Inshore Photos.
Wayne said on Friday he caught a couple keeper flounder as well.

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports on Sat: "Amy Marts caught a 19-inch flounder near
Harbour Island. Kevin Javins landed an 11 lb. sheepshead off the North
Jetty. Walter Moore caught a 6 lb. 7 oz. flounder on the "Morning Star". On
Friday, Charles Frank landed a 6.1 lb. flounder during a trip to an
artificial reef aboard the "Morning Star". The sea bass bite was fantastic!
On Thursday, "Morning Star" had a nice catch of sea bass, some croaker and a
flounder, all at an artificial reef.
Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is now open (no fishing license required when
fishing on this pier). Anglers caught lots of flounder, bluefish, blowfish,
spot, and small throwback sea bass. They also caught a lot of crab since the
storm. One group had close to a bushel! Anglers catch blues, trout and
shad at night on
Spec Rigs and
Got-cha Plugs. J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the
pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he
will give you a pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot
about a block away from the pier. Call the Oceanic Pier at 410-289-2602 for
parking details.
Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on Sept 2nd :There are some small stripers
(18-25") hitting in the Inlet during the day and night. Before dark use a
bucktail and after dark use a dark plug. Blues are moving through on the
incoming tide during the day. Plenty of short flounder around with some
bigger croakers in the mix.
We did get a report from a customer that fished B Buoy. He had a mixed bag
of flounder, croakers and blues.
The surf has been producing small blues, kings and croakers.
Reminder: Tautog will be closed September 1-28. Delaware Seashore Fall Surf
Fishing Classic - Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25. Brochures are
available in the store."
Bill Sports Center in Lewes, DEL (302-645-7654) reports on the 2nd: ''DB
Buoy saw flounder up to 22-inches, sea bass, blues and lots of croaker
between 12 and 16-inches."
Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on Sept 1st: "
Before the passage of Hurricane Irene, the ocean flounder bite was good. On
Friday, just ahead of the storm, fishermen on Katy Did caught more than 70
flounder south of DB Buoy. They ended up with 8 keepers, including trophies
of 8.09 and 7.47 pounds for Jeremy Armolt. Catching in Delaware Bay was
decent too. The Lil' Angler fished the Brown Shoal reefs Friday, with the
storm on the way. The take included a 6 pound flounder for Mike Bayshore,
plus 4 other keepers. In addition, the guys had over 20 blowfish and a bunch
of croakers. Patrons on the Angler and Pirate King loaded up on hardheads
Thursday and Friday before the blow.
Boaters that went out Monday through Wednesday reported a slow pick on spots
that had been productive prior to the bad weather. A few short flounder and
some snapper bluefish were taken on reef sites 6,7 and 8. Crews working the
other side of the Bay supposedly found some croakers on Crow Shoal. Tog
catches were actually pretty good during the last couple days of the season
for guys toggled into the Outer Wall. That season reopens September 29th.
Slot stripers were taken before the size change was implemented. Clams on
the bottom near the Lewes Drawbrige were productive offerings. Rockfish also
bit Stingsilvers, Kastmasters and Fin-S-Fish cast in the evenings near the
Coast Guard Station. Striped bass caught in Delaware Bay and it's
tributaries must once again meet a 28 inch minimum in order to be kept, and
the limit remains two per angler. The storm didn't seem to bother the spot.
Plenty were landed by folks on the rails of the Cape Henlopen Pier using
bloodworms and Fishbites. Ocean bottom bouncers had some sea bass and big
croakers up to 20 inches while working rough structure northwest of DB Buoy
Wednesday. On the offshore scene, a major white marlin bite like what took
place the past two seasons has yet to materialize. Boats did get into
yellowfins while trolling 50 fathoms near the 42100 line inshore of Poor
Man's Canyon.

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on Sept 2nd:
Tuesday was a picture perfect day on the water and other than a very swift
moving drift from all the water that had been backed up in the mouth of the
Bay and river it was not a bad trip. While we certainly didn't see the
numbers of Flounder that we had been seeing before the storm, there was no
shortage of bites when your baits hit the bottom. A bunch of Sea Bass,
Snapper sized Blues and some rather large Croakers were seemingly everywhere
we went on the old grounds. It was clear that fish had been on the move,
these were the first Croakers we have seen on the old grounds so far this
year and there were seemingly more Bass around also. The Flounder proved to
be a little disappointing but no big surprise after the weather, at least we
did see a few proving they are still around. We managed to put a little day
together Tuesday with a nice mixed bag of fish by the end of the day and
everyone had at least a good supper or more.
Meanwhile we are fortunate enough to continue catching a nice mixed bag with
the Bass, Blues, and the Croakers and I think we are going to continue
seeing this variety catch for several weeks. This is a good thing! There
seems to be more Sea Bass around now than before the blow and some of the
Croakers I have been seeing are Jumbo sized measuring from fifteen to over
twenty inches in length!
I will continue running daily with my All-Day trips and we will be targeting
anything that bites the hooks. As long as we can make a day with the Fluke
we will continue jigging and using the long baits but I have already made
some modifications to our rigs and baits with the variety of fish that is
around now and I'm not going to be too picky with what wants to bite. The
Fluke however will be at the top of the target list. All-Day trips depart
the docks at 7:00 a.m. and we generally return shortly after 4:00. We will
also be running Half-Day trips daily departing at 8:00 a.m. and then again
at 1:00 p.m. Half-Day trips are also seeing a little variety of fish but
will be primarily targeting the Croakers.
If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special
trip please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports to get you a taste
of what he has to offer:
09/03/11 Ran a few miles north of where we had fished yesterday in hopes
of finding some tuna. Arrived at the numbers to find way too many boats.
Heck, it looked like the White Marlin Open. Worked the sixty-nine degree
water for the first two hours without a pull. Decided to run back down south
where we were two days before. After five miles I notice the water temp is
seventy-four so we throw out the spread. Five minutes late we have double
headed of turkeys. The charter is having a ball with these fish so we hang
around the area. The next few hours produce what must have been twenty or
twenty-five turkeys and this crew from PA is having a ball with these hard
pulling buggers . With thirty minutes left in the day I find a little patch
of super blue, seventy-six degree water. After two passes, we have a White
Marlin hooked-up. The fish puts on a spectacular show behind the boat but
eventually throws the hook.
09/02/11 With high hopes I point the boat to the same area that produced our
fish yesterday. My hopes are dashed after two hours of trolling the same
numbers produce only one Mahi for the box. Decided to move a few miles west
on a tip for a buddy of mine fifteen mile north. As soon as we hit the
forty-five fathom mark three rods go down and these seem like the right
thing. As the fish get with-in sight we realize we've been hit by turkeys.
Swung back through and two rods go down, one turkey and one Yellowfin. Since
the charter was absolutely cool with catching these super hard fighting
fish, I decided to hang out and try to pull a few more Yellowfin out of the
turkeys. The rest of the day must have produced twenty + turkeys, one Mahi,
but no more Yellowfin. Back in the slip with two Mahi and one small
Yellowfin.
09/01/11 First offshore trip since the big blow. Ran fifty mile east looking
for warmer water. Lines in when we hit sixty-eight degrees. Fifteen minutes
later we have our first Yellowfin hooked-up. Unfortunately, the fish never
made it to the gaff. That nasty habit of pumping the rod claimed another
victim. The next two hours produced several bites, both Yellowfin, Skipjack
and False Albacore (aka Turkeys). The middle of the day was rather slow but
sometime shortly after noon, the fish decided to bite again. Back in the
slip with six small Yellowfin in the box.

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing
Alliance
has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the
future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that
do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding
steadily.

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.
